Alfred State Moves to Year Three of NCAA DIII Process

The NCAA Division III Membership Committee recently announced that Alfred State has satisfied the requirements of year two of the membership process and will move on to year three in 2016-17.

"Alfred State continues to take the steps necessary to show our colleagues that we belong on the same NCAA playing field with them," commented Athletic Director Dr. Kelly Higgins. "We are excited and ready to move on to the third year of this process."

The DIII provisional membership process takes four years and each year has different requirements and duties that an institution must fulfill. The NCAA and its membership committee work hand in hand with the institution to acclimate the college to DIII policies and procedures. Once the process is complete, Alfred State will have all the benefits of full membership, including voting rights on DIII legislation, postseason play, committee memberships, as well as institutional grants and student-athlete awards.

During the 2016-17 athletic year, Alfred State contests vs. other NCAA DIII institutions will count for postseason play and Alfred State statistics will be included in regional and national rankings.

College President Dr. Skip Sullivan echoed the excitement of Dr. Higgins. "We are pleased with the progress we have made toward full membership in being granted NCAA third-year approval. A lot of work and time goes into the process and I want to thank everyone involved for their effort."

Over 350 student-athletes compete at Alfred State. The college sponsors 18 intercollegiate teams (the college will add a 19th sport, western equestrian, in 2017-18) that are housed in the Athletic Department, which also oversees physical education, intramurals, and the campus fitness centers.

Alfred State is slated to finish the membership process and become a full NCAA DIII member beginning in the 2018-19 school year.
