Baseball: 0-6

The Pioneers have been tripped up in their first three games in their spring trip to Myrtle Beach, SC. They fell 20-2 and 10-5 to Scranton and 6-2 to Principia.

Andy Pichardo (Academy of American Studies) leads the Pioneers offense with a .500 (4 for 8) batting average and 3 RBI. Connor Odonoghue (Avon) collected four hits in his one start of the week and Robert Cardona (All Hallows) has driven in two runs.

On the mound, relievers Kyle Kuzma (Waverly) and Kyle Sickau (Hamburg) have led the way. Sickau didn't allow a run in 2.2 innings while Kuzma has allowed one run in 4 innings of work.

Lacrosse: 2-2

The lacrosse team outscored Houghton 7-2 in the final 23 minutes of the game to rally for a 15-13 victory in their only action of the week.

The Pioneers and Highlanders were tied at 3-3 after one, Houghton led 8-5 at half, the teams were tied at 11-11 after three, and Alfred State held a 4-2 advantage in the final quarter.

Aaron Buck (Churchville Chili) led the Pioneers with six points (2 goals and four assists) while Joe Johnson (Churchville Chili) had three goals and two assists. Patrick Matkoski (West Genesee) had a hat trick, Tyler Cook (Corning East) tallied two goals, an assist, and seven groundballs, and Ryan Amidon (Fayetteville Manlius) made 13 saves.

Softball: 2-6

The Lady Pioneers have won two of their eight games as they play at the Gene Cusic Clasic in Ft. Myers, FL. They defeated Wheelock 10-2 and Rockford 12-7 but have dropped decisions to Drew (10-1), Marian (11-2), Nichols (9-5), Edgewood (4-0), UMASS-Dartmouth (8-1), and Geneva (11-8).

Katie Jackson (Troy, PA) leads the team with a .444 batting average (12 for 27) with 5 RBI. Kelsey Lewis (Johnson City) and Amanda Rockefeller (Bolivar Richburg) are both hitting .381 while Lura O'Keefe (Allegany Limestone) is hitting .370 with a team high 6 RBI. 

Jordan Leonard (Lancaster) has earned both victories on the mound but Tonia Tinker (Alfred Almond) has a 4.96 ERA in 29.2 innings of work.

Outdoor Track & Field: 

The outdoor track & field team begins their season this weekend when they travel to Juniata.

Wrestling: 10th at NCWA National Championships

Ryan Thierman (Portville) and George VanValen (Ithaca) led a strong showing for Alfred State at the 2016 NCWA Championships in Kissimmee, FL. Thierman (125) and VanValen (174) both finished 4th and helped the Pioneers to a 10th place finish in the DI standings.

Thierman defeated Edison Garcia (Central Florida) 7-0 in his first match, pinned Dell Ngonga (Liberty) in 5:00, and won 12-10 over Brendan Hazelton (Grand Valley State) to advance to the semifinals in the 125 lb. weight class. He fell in the semifinals, but rebounded with a 8-4 victory over Byron Smith (Memphis) to advance to the 3rd place match. In that match he lost a 9-5 decision to Devon Jackson (Houston - Downtown).

VanValen won 14-1 over Deontay Wadley (Penn State - DuBois), pinned Noah Villermarette (Texas State) in 2:25, and defeated James Jones (Grays Harbor) 11-8 to advance to the semis. He lost a hard fought 8-7 decision in the semifinals but earned a injury default victory over Zakery Pitt (Emmanuel) to advance to the 3rd place match but lost a 5-3 match to Bailey Bischer (Grand Valley State).

The Pioneers scored 44.5 points in the competition to record the 10th place finish. The 10th place finish was the best for the Pioneers in their three years competing in the NCWA.
