Cross Country: Men & Women 1st at Alfred State Invitational
The cross country team opened up the 2016 season with an impressive showing as both the men and women won the team title at the Alfred State Invitational. The men had the top 12 finishers and scored a perfect 15 while the women scored a 22 to earn the title.
Jacob Hanss (East Rochester) won the men's race by 58 seconds. He finished the 5k course in 17:32.04. Hunter Clark (Alfred Almond) was 2nd (18:34.88) and Eric Hulbert (Mexico) was 3rd (18:55.08). Elmira College finished 2nd in the men's competition with a score of 50. Keuka and Kent State Tuscarawas did not field a full team.
Lindsey Thiel (Liverpool) finished 1:06 ahead of everyone on her way to winning the women's 5k title in 21:53.84. Kelly Healy (Maple Hill) was 3rd (23:52.12) and Cassandra Ryan (Gloversville) was 5th (24:26.12). The Lady Pioneers scored 22 followed by Keuka (43), and Elmira (59). Kent State Tuscawaras did not field a full team.
The meet was the first under the direction of new Pioneer head coach Kent Baker.
Football: 0-1
William Paterson scored 22 unanswered points in the 2nd quarter to build on their one touchdown lead en route to a 43-13 victory over Alfred State in the season opener for both teams.
James Waldron threw two touchdown passes to Malcolm Robinson (6 and 45 yards) to give William Paterson the early lead. Dashon Turner (West Genesee) connected with Jason Gordon (Uniondale) on a 3-yard touchdown pass on the first play of the 2nd quarter to cut the lead to 14-7. Gordon caught a 80-yard pass earlier in the drive.
WP took control of the game in the final 5:08 of the 2nd quarter. Waldron threw 11-yard touchdown to Anthony DiMarsico to cap seven-play drive. After a long punt return (71 yards) by Robinson, he ran in from three-yards out with 39 seconds remaining to add to the lead. Two plays later the Alfred State turned the ball over and William Paterson scored the very next play when Taheem Jackson scooped the ball up after a WP offensive fumble after a sack and went 40 yards for the score to make it 36-7 at the half.
The Pioneers forced a three and out to start the 2nd half and the offense got back to work. Jacob Wims (Rochester/John Marshall) rushed in from 33-yards out to make it 36-13. On the next William Paterson possession Isaiah Diaz-Mays rushed in from 26-yards out to cap the scoring for the day.
Turner finished the day 12 for 21 for 130 yards and one score in his collegiate debut. Gordon led the wide receivers with two catches for 83 yards and a score while Wims rushed eight times for 54 yards.
Brandon Davis (Lansing) led the defense with 14 tackles while Steven Hubick (Fountain Hills, AZ) chipped in 11 tackles.
Men's Soccer: 1-1
The men's soccer team split a pair of games at the Frostburg State Invitational. The Pioneers defeated St. Vincent 3-2 on Friday and fell 3-0 to Catholic on Saturday.
Tyler Landries (Genesee Valley), John Mormino (Alfred Almond), and Bryan Whitbeck (Akron) all scored 1st half goals on Friday in the Pioneers victory. Albert Senyah Breezy (Central Islip) picked up two assists while Nick Donner (Lancaster) picked up the other. In net, Jacob Bartz (West Seneca West) made four saves to earn the victory.
Vs. Catholic, the Pioneers were held to just seven shots and couldn't get anything past the Cardinals goalkeepers.
Landries, Markus Ernest (Alfred Almond), and Cooper Weinman (Genesee Valley) were named to the All-Tournament team.
Women's Soccer: 2-0
The Lady Pioneers earned a 9-0 victory over SUNY Cobleskill and a 4-1 win over SUNY Delhi to open up the 2016 season.
Michayla Salatel (Geneseo) and Melissa Mineti (Livonia) each recorded hat tricks in the home opener. Brooke Geibel (Arkport), Jocelyn Brittingham (Hornell), and Kylie Newman (Waverly) also found the back of the net. Brittingham finished with a goal and two assists on the night.
Salatel scored twice and Mineti had a goal and two assists in the victory over Delhi. Darien Hooker (Canisteo Greenwood) scored her first career goal to start the scoring.
Allison Danielak (Brockport) played every minute of the two contests in goal and recorded six saves.
Volleyball: 3-0
The Lady Spikers won all three of their matches during the opening weekend. They defeated Penn College and D'Youville 3-1 and downed Cazenovia 3-0.
Bryanna Godfrey (Tioga) led the Lady Pioneers with 34 kills and added 10 aces, and 31 digs. Jessica Padley (Sweet Home) finished with 26 kills and 19 digs, Madison Szpaicher (Ellicottville) passed out 89 assists and had 24 digs, and Valerie Intini (Eastridge) had a team best 41 digs. Grace Hall (Ellicottville) added 21 kills and nine aces while Shaina Griffin (Portville) chipped in 20 kills and 18 digs.
The Lady Pioneers hit .226 on the week, recorded 38 service aces, and 16 total blocks.
