Cross Country: Men 19th, Women 22nd at U of Rochester

The men's cross country team finished 19th out of 29 teams and the women's team finished 22nd out of 27 teams at the University of Rochester Yellowjacket Invitational.

Eric Hulbert (Mexico) was the top male finisher for the Pioneers. He finished 155th out of 317 runners finishing the 8k course in 29:11.2. Jesse Hallett (Honeoye) was 181st (29:54.7) and Austin Demberg (Minisink Valley) was 189th. Mount Union took the men's title with a score of 62. The Pioneers scored 617 on the day.

Lindsey Thiel (Liverpool) led the Lady Pioneers contingent in the 6k course. She finished 98th overall out of 352 runners in 24:54.4. Emily Brigman (Lancaster) was 240th (27:02.6) and Kelly Healy (Maple Hill) was 244th (27:07.1). Cornell won the women's team title with a score of 23. The Lady Pioneers scored 647 on the day.

Football: 0-3

Alfred State led 27-20 early in the 3rd quarter but the University of Rochester scored 35 unanswered points as the Yellowjackets earned a 55-27 victory at Pioneer Stadium.

Dashon Turner (Camillus/West Genesee) connected with Josh Ashley(Brooklyn/Grand Street Campus) on a 30-yard touchdown pass just under five minutes into the game to give the Pioneers the early lead. An interception by Steven Hubick (Fountain Hills, AZ) set up the short four-play, 40-yard drive.

U of R scored the next 12 points to grab the lead but with 39 seconds left in the 1st quarter, Zack Goodwin(Poughkeepsie/FD Roosevelt) cut the lead to 12-10 with a 24-yard field goal. 

Alfred State retook the lead with 8:22 remaining in the 1st half when Hezekiah Williamson (Albany) rushed in from three-yards out to cap a seven-play, 78-yard drive. The Yellowjackets answered right back but Goodwin sent the game into halftime tied at 20-20 when he connected on a 35-yard field goal.

The 2nd half started off on the positive note for the Pioneers. Justin Espinal (Beacon) recovered a Yellowjacket fumble on the first offensive play of the half. Three plays later, Khris Greggs (Rochester/Aquinas) raced in from three yards outs to make it 27-20.

U of R answered right back with a 13-play, 79-yard drive to tie the game up. After a missed FG by Alfred State, the Yellowjackets put together four more scoring drives in the 2nd half to earn the victory.

Williamson had his first 100-yard rushing game as a Pioneer. He rushed 22 times for 125 yards and a score. Greggs also went over 100-yards with 104 yards receiving on six catches. Turner finished the day 12 for 23 for 174 yards. On the day, the blue & gold offense had a season high 394 yards.

Hubick and Espinal led the Pioneer defense with 12 tackles each. Brandon Davis (Lansing) added 11 tackles.

Men's Soccer: 2-3

The men's soccer team scored four 2nd half goals as they defeated D'Youville 5-2 on Sunday afternoon in their lone contest of the week.

Brandon Holley (Livonia) and Markus Ernest (Alfred Almond) scored a pair of goals in the victory while Tyler Landries (Genesee Valley) picked up a goal and two assists. 

Holley got the Pioneers in the 4th minute before D'Youville tied it in the 21st. Landries scored 8:23 into the 2nd half but the Spartans answered back just 22 seconds later.

Ernest gave the Pioneers the lead for good in the 69th minute when he scored after getting a short pass from Landries. Holley added to the lead just over two minutes later and Ernest capped the scoring in the 88th minute.

Jacob Bartz (West Seneca) made two saves to earn the victory in net.

Women's Soccer: 3-4

The Lady Pioneers fell in all three of their road contests this past week, 4-2 at Keystone, 3-2 at Penn College, and 2-0 at Lycoming.

Stormi Kruger (Medina) found the back of the net twice this week while Melissa Mineti (Livonia) had a goal and an assist. Michayla Salatel (Geneseo) netted her eighth of the season. Allison Danielak (Brockport) made 19 saves in net this week.

Volleyball: 8-0

The volleyball team swept a pair of matches on Saturday, 3-0 over Penn State New Kensington and 3-0 over Penn State Beaver, to run their season opening winning streak to eight games. 

The Lady Pioneers dominated in their opener vs. New Kensington earning a 25-5, 25-5, 25-5 victory. The team recorded 17 service aces and connected on 23 kills with only four errors. Bryanna Godfrey (Tioga) and Jessica Padley (Buffalo/Sweet Home) each had six kills while Madison Szpaicher (Ellicottville) passed out 14 assists.

In their nightcap, the Lady Pioneers collected 39 kills and 11 service aces as they downed Penn State Beaver 25-12, 25-14, 25-12. Godfrey finished with 14 kills, seven digs, and three aces while Szpaicher passed out 30 assists. Madison Webster (Corning) had a team high 13 digs and Janae Hamilton (Ellicottville) collected 11 kills.
