Pioneer Weekly Update: Sept. 25 Edition

Cross Country: Men 6th, Women 12th at Roberts Wesleyan Harry Anderson Invitational

On an unseasonably warm day, the men's cross country team stayed cool in the heat and registered their best performance of the 2017 season. The Pioneer men finished 6th overall out of 19 teams at the Roberts Wesleyan Harry Anderson Invitational. The women's team finished 12th on the 5k course. 

Jacob Hanss (East Rochester-Mechanical Engineering Tech) led the Pioneer men in the 8k course. Hanss averaged 5:30 per mile as he finished 13th in 27:17.9. Shawn Rutledge (Watkins Glen-Diesel Mechanic) was 26th (27:59.1) and Eric Hulbert (Mexico-IT Network Administration) was 53rd (29:01.2). All five of the Pioneer point scorers averaged under a six minute mile. The Pioneers scored 188 on the day and were 3rd out of the 10 NCAA DIII schools in the competition.

For the fourth straight race, Lindsey Thiel (Liverpool-Construction Management) was the top female finisher. She averaged 6:34 per mile over the 5k course to cross the finish line in 34th with a time of 20:24.1. Olivia Leonti (Port Byron-Nursing) was 82nd (21:32.3) and Katherine Frascella (Franklinville-Nursing) was 114th (22:26.4). The Pioneers were 12th (8th NCAA Division III school) in the team scoring with a mark of 362.

Football: 0-3

The football team had the week off as they began preparation for the ECFC portion of the schedule. The Pioneers play their first game in the ECFC this weekend when they battle SUNY Maritime on Saturday.

Men's Soccer: 2-5-1

The Pioneers split a pair of home matches this week. They fell 3-1 to SUNY Poly but rebounded for a 5-1 victory over Penn State Beaver on Sunday.

Adam Wilkins (Rochester/Odyssey-Financial Planning) scored the lone goal vs. SUNY Poly on Tuesday. The goal tied the game at 1-1 but the Wildcats answered with a pair of goals by Tyler Labbe to take the contest. Vinny Biancuzzo (Genesee Valley-Business) made seven saves in net.

After letting up an early goal vs. PS Beaver, the Pioneers scored five unanswered. Scott Fingar (Penn Yan-Cyber Security) tied it up in the 1st half and then Brandon Holley (Livonia-Architecture) scored the game-winner early in the 2nd. Ryan Johnson (Sodus-Automotive Technician) scored a pair of goals on penalty kicks and Noah Holmok (Alfred Almond-Sport Management) capped the scoring with his first of the season. Biancuzzo earned the win in net making three saves in just under 74 minutes of play.

Women's Soccer: 4-2

The women's soccer team had their lone game of the season postponed on Sunday. They return to action this week with a pair of games. They travel to Pitt Bradford on Wednesday and host Villa Maria on Friday.

Volleyball 5-6

The Lady Pioneers were 2-2 this week as they opened up the home portion of their season. They fell 3-1 to Houghton and 3-0 to Penn State Behrend but swept Cazenovia and Lyndon State (VT) to conclude the week.

Bryanna Godfrey (Tioga-Financial Planning) led the Pioneers with 33 kills and 17 service aces this week while Madison Webster (Corning-Financial Planning) registered 51 digs. Kiara Perkins (Coudersport, PA-Liberal Arts & Science - Social Sciences) recorded 26 kills, Sarah Raichlin (Binghamton/Chenango Valley-Nursing) passed out 60 assists, and Morgan Hungerford (Lyndonville-Architecture) was credited with 21 kills.

The Pioneers were impressive in the two victories. Versus Cazenovia, the team hit .314 and served 10 aces. On Sunday morning, the blue & gold served 27 aces and hit a smoldering .512 versus Lyndon State.
