Team Updates
Cross Country: Women 1st, Men 2nd at ACAA Championships
The cross country teams had a strong showing at the ACAA Championships on Saturday. The women's team won the conference title while the men finished 2nd.
Lindsey Thiel (Liverpool-Construction Management) finished 2nd overall on the 6k course. She finished in 25:52.6 just 13 seconds behind race winner Megan Knorr (Valley Forge). Olivia Leonti (Port Byron-Nursing) was 3rd in 26:35, Katherine Frascella (Franklinville-Nursing) was 4th in 26:53.4, Cassidy McCourt (Buffalo/Emerson-Sport Management) was 7th in 27:49.9, and Emily Brigman (Lancaster-Vet Tech) rounded out the Pioneer top five with a 17th place finish in 30:39.4.
The Pioneers scored a 27 to win the meet. Delhi was 2nd with 38, SUNY Canton 3rd with 81, and Mills (CA) was 4th with 85.
Jacob Hanss (East Rochester-Mechanical Engineering Tech) was the top finisher for the Pioneers on the 8k course at the SUNY Delhi Golf Course. He crossed the finish line in 27:37.2. Shawn Rutledge (Watkins Glen-Diesel Mechanic) was 6th in 28:19.4, Eric Hulbert (Mexico-IT Network Administration) was 7th in 28:50.3, Austin Demberg (Westtown/Minisink Valley-Mechanical Engineering Tech) was 12th (30:29.6), and Ryan Lohr (West Seneca-Mechanical Engineering Tech) was 13th in 30:42.5.
Delhi took the men's title with a score of 19. Alfred State was 2nd (40), SUNY Canton was 3rd (84), Valley Forge was 4th (112).
Football: 1-7
The football team earned their first Eastern Collegiate Football Conference (ECFC) victory with a 18-8 victory over Mount Ida on Saturday afternoon. The Pioneers scored 18 unanswered points in the 2nd half to erase a 8-0 deficit.
The Mustang defense accounted for the lone points of the 1st half when Charles Wade recorded a safety with 2:38 left in the opening quarter. Mount Ida accumulated 144 yards in the 1st half and held the Pioneers to just 39. Mount Ida came out of halftime and increased their lead to 8-0 (PAT was missed). The Mustangs forced a Pioneer punt in the ensuing possession but the punt was muffed and Dominic Pearce-Farley (Brooklyn/Sheepshead Bay-Electrical Engineering) recovered deep inside Mount Ida territory. One play later, Kiegan Brown (Cortland-Cyber Security) burst through a hole and got the Pioneers on the board with a nine-yard score. (two point conversion failed). With just over two minutes left in the 3rd quarter, Alfred State forced a Mustang punt. The snap for the punt was bounced to the punter and Carlisle Philip (Brooklyn/South Shore-Sport Management) took down the punter on the Mustang 33. Two plays later, Brown scored for the second time in the half and fifth time in the last two weeks when he scampered in from 28-yards out to make it 12-8 (the two-point conversion failed). Alfred State forced two consecutive Mustang punts in the 4th quarter and then put together an impressive drive to seal the victory. The seven-play, 79-yard drive that took 4:28 off the clock was capped when Hunter Evingham (Bolivar Richburg-Undeclared) connected with Jalen Long (Rochester/Bishop Kearney-Sport Management) on a 54-yard pass play to give the blue & gold a 18-8 lead (PAT was blocked). Dashown Wilson (Bronx/DeWitt Clinton-Criminal Justice) ended any comeback hopes for Mount Ida when he intercepted a pass with just over 90 seconds remaining in the contest.
Brown finished the day with 84 yards rushing and two scores on 24 carries while Evingham was 7 for 15 for 102 yards. Long caught two passes for 64 yards. Owen Davis (Lansing-Sport Management) led the Pioneer defense with nine tackles while John Lauretti (Seaford-Tech Management) finished with eight tackles and three sacks. The Pioneers recorded five sacks on the day, recovered two fumbles, and intercepted a pass.
Michael Zimmerman (Canandaigua) had a big day on special teams. He punted seven times with four of his punts landing inside the 20. He averaged 43.7 yards per punt.
Men's Soccer: 3-12-1
The Pioneers split their final two games of the 2017 season. They downed Hilbert 3-1 but fell to Geneva 4-0.
After Hilbert scored early, Noah Holmok (Alfred Almond-Sport Management) tied it up after getting a pass from Christian Jankuloski (Webster Schroeder-Architecture). Chris Balys (Holley-Nursing) scored the game-winner early in the 2nd half after getting a pass from Bryan Whitbeck (Akron-Electrical Construction and Maintenance). Zachary Curran (Williamson-Welding) added an insurance goal after a corner kick from Ryan Johnson (Sodus-Automotive Technician). Zack Barker (Steubenville, OH-Computer Information Systems) made five saves in net to record his first victory as a Pioneer.
Versus Geneva, the Tornadoes scored four 1st half goals and eased to the victory. Vinny Biancuzzo (Genesee Valley-Business) made four saves in net during the 2nd half.
Women's Soccer: 10-3
Michayla Salatel (Geneseo-Financial Planning) netted a hat trick in the 2nd half as the women's soccer team won their sixth straight match, 3-1 over Hilbert in their only action this week.
After a scoreless 1st half, Salatel got the blue & gold on the board in the 58th minute after getting a nice pass from Kylie Newman (Waverly-Nursing) that led to a 1 on 1 opportunity with the keeper. Salatel made it 2-0 just under four minutes later when she scored after her first shot after a corner kick was saved. After a Hawk goal, Salatel answered right back to complete her hat trick after getting a long lead pass from Brooke Geibel (Arkport-Nursing). Allison Danielak (Brockport-Drafting/CAD) won her 10th game, and 30th career, in net.
Swimming: Men 0-1, Women 1-0
The swim team had the week off but returns to action this weekend when they travel to Buffalo State.
Volleyball 10-16
The volleyball team won a pair of matches on Saturday at the Cazenovia tri-match. They defeated Cazenovia 25-19, 25-20, 24-26, 25-14 and then swept Penn College 25-10, 25-9, 25-8.
Versus Cazenovia, Kiara Perkins (Coudersport-Liberal Arts & Science - Social Sciences) had a big day. She led the team with 15 kills and five aces. She also added seven digs. Bryanna Godfrey (Tioga-Financial Planning) finished with 12 kills and 17 digs, Madison Webster (Corning-Financial Planning) had 25 digs, and Sarah Raichlin (Binghamton/Chenango Valley-Nursing) passed out 35 assists.
The Pioneers collected 14 service aces in the sweep of Penn College. Raichlin led the team with five aces and 16 assists while Nicole Donnelly (Livonia-Construction Management) chipped in four aces. Godfrey led the team with 11 kills and Webster collected a team high 12 digs.
