Team Updates
Men's Basketball: 4-2
The Pioneers won both their games this week, 76-67 at Wells and 56-52 vs. Houghton, to improve their winning streak to three games.
Alexshay Pearce (Rochester/Charlotte - Tech Management) led the way with 41 points and 17 boards while Juwan Toliver (Buffalo/McKinley - Tech Management) scored 25 and grabbed 16 rebounds. Marcus Rhett (Middletown - Sport Management) finished the week with 22 points.
The Pioneers shot 40.7% from the field for the week and outrebounded their opponents 94 to 75.
Women's Basketball: 2-5
The blue & gold went 2-2 during a busy week of action. They defeated Wells 63-59 and Central Penn 88-63 but were tripped up by Buffalo State 62-56 and Houghton 71-47.
Catherine Bialecki (Alfred Almond - Diagnostic Medical Sonography) scored 91 points, grabbed 43 rebounds, blocked 18 shots, and had eight steals on the week. Rayanna Anderson (Wellsville - Sport Management) finished the week with 53 points (9 for 24 from three) and 21 assists while Michayla Salatel (Geneseo - Financial Planning) added 28 points and 22 assists.
The Pioneers shot 35.3% from the field for the week, connected on 24 three-pointers, and blocked 29 shots.
Western Equestrian: Two Reserve Hi-Point Team Honors
The Western Equestrian team earned two reserve hi-point team honors during their competition on Saturday at Alfred University.
The morning show resulted in a pair of 1st place ribbons. Kathleen Crandon (Webster Thomas - Biological Science) won in intermediate completion and Katelynn Lawson (Clyde Savannah - Agricultural Business) won in beginner. Rachel McNeal (Elmira/Waverly -Radiologic Technology) was 2nd in open reining and Kirstin Reynolds (Portville - Diagnostic Medical Sonography) was 2nd in intermediate.
The afternoon show featured five victories for the Pioneers. Alyssa Beardsley (Letchworth - Architectural Technology) won in advanced, Caylen Bedow (Fillmore - Vet Tech/Ag Tech), Jamie Fredenburg (Fabius Pompey - Radiologic Technology) and Reynolds all won intermediate competition, and Meagan Castoro (Syosset - Forensics) won in beginner. Rachel von Hagn (Bath - Nursing) was 2nd in advanced and Crandon was 2nd in intermediate.
With their strong performances, von Hagn, Sarah Czelusta (Pioneer - Welding), and Reynolds have earned the points necessary to qualify for Regionals.
Wrestling: 2-3
Five Pioneers finished in the top six as the Alfred State wrestling team competed at the Niagara Open on Saturday.
George Van Valen (Ithaca - Construction Management) won his second tournament of the season with three dominating victories. He won 16-0 over Jordan Hines (Henry Ford), pinned Evan Makupson (Spartanburg Methodist) in 3:25, and won 8-0 over Logan Rill (UB Unattached) in the finals.
Jeffrey Gress (Lyndonville - Construction Management) and Casey Connor (Barnstable, MA - Business Management) both finished 5th on the day. Gress pinned Sara Andresen (UMASS Unattached) in 1:16 to start the day but fell in the quarterfinals. He was bounced back with a 5-2 win over Wesley Woodworth (Brockport) and a 18-3 tech fall of John Cantwell (Brockport) to advance to the consolation semifinals. After falling in the consolation semifinals, Gress pinned Joe Neylon (UMASS Unattached) in 40 seconds to earn 5th place at 133 lbs. Conner won 14-13 over Jude Mattocks (Mercyhurst NE) in the quarterfinals but fell in both the semifinals and consolation semifinals before bouncing back for a second victory over Mattocks 3-1 in the 5th place bout.
Kyle Fitzgerald (Turin/South Lewis - Mechanical Engineering Tech) won four matches and finished 4-3 to earn 6th in the heavyweight weight class while Patrick Lehman (Cincinnatus, NY/Marathon - Building Trades Construction) was also 6th at 125 lb.
On Friday night, the Pioneers split a pair of dual matches. They defeated Jamestown CC 47-10 but fell 35-12 to Muskegon (MI) CC. Van Valen and Gress both picked up a pair of victories.
Swimming: Women 3-1, Men 1-3, 8th at Fredonia Invitational
Both the men and women finished 8th overall at the three-day Fredonia Blue Devil Invitational over the weekend. The men scored 285 points while the women scored 209.
The Pioneer divers led the way as Nick Beach (Canandaigua – Heavy Equipment Operations) won the 3m competition with 332.30 points and was 2nd in the 1m with 358 points. Jackson Teboe (Falconer – Nursing) was 3rd in the 3m (318.15) and 5th in the 1m (302.75) while Austin Miller (Hornell - Undeclared) was 3rd in the 1m (319.7) and 4th in the 3m (307.75).
Ethan Dale (Lock Haven, PA - Architecture) was 7th in the 100 breast (1:01.69) and was 8th in the 200 breast (2:18.30) to pace the men. Bryce Cutler (Newton, NJ – Network Administration) was 9th in the 400 IM (4:29.19) and 12th (18:37.39) in the 1650 free. Nathan Miller (Gananda- Mechanical Engineering Tech) was 11th in the 100 fly (56.85), Tim Olin (Perry – Mechanical Engineering Tech) was 11th in the 100 back (57.75),
On the women's side the team took 11th, 12th, 13th, and 14th in the 200 fly. Sarah Stevens (Wellsville – Interior Design) was 11th (2:39.48), Payton Armstrong (Highland Mills/Monroe-Woodbury - Undeclared) was 12th (2:55.74), Elizabeth Jurs (Elba – Agricultural Technology) was 13th (2:57.18), Hannah Snayczuk (Machias/Pioneer - Nursing) was 14th (2:59.51). Stevens was also 11th in the 400 IM (5:17.94). Kathryn Lewis (Sanborn/Niagara Wheatfield - Architecture) was 12th in the 1650 free (20:02.89) and 12th in the 500 free
Indoor Track & Field: Men 5th, Women 8th at Brockport
The Pioneer men finished 5th out of nine teams with 39.83 points while the women finished 8th as the team opened up the 2017-18 indoor season.
The multi athletes led the way for the Pioneers. Andrew Ruebenstahl (Washingtonville - Mechanical Engineering Technology) finished 3rd in the heptathlon, Tim Berry (Midlakes - Mechanical Engineering) was 4th, and Alex Brown (Wellsville - Forensic Science) finished 6th. Ruebenstahl finished the seven events with 3,621 points (6th best in school history), Berry finished with 3,539 points (9th all-time) and Brown finished with 3,472 points in the competition (10th all-time).
In the pentathlon, Holly Fiore (Niagara Falls - Architectural Technology) finished in 10th place with 2,293 points. Her score was just two short of her personal best which is the 2nd best effort in Alfred State history. Emily Brigman (Lancaster - Vet Tech) finished 14th overall with 2,014 points.
In other events: Zack Goodwin (Poughkeepsie/FD Roosevelt - Architecture) was 7th in the 60 hurdles (9.28) and tied for 8th in the high jump (1.63 m) in his first collegiate track meet. Nicholas Brown (Wellsville - Environmental Science) was 7th in the high jump (1.68 m) and 11th in the long jump (5.21 m), Conrad Kroll (Westtown/Minisink Valley - Digital Media & Animation) was 9th in the 1 miile (5:13.01), Nate Robertson (Hamburg - CAD/CAM & Mechanical Engineering) was 10th in the 400 m (54.97), Isiah Richardson (Geneva - Building Construction) was 10th in the long jump (5.83 m), and Dylan Perlino (Holland - Mechanical Engineering Technology) was 10th in the weight throw with a throw of 12.82 m.
On the women's side, Kathrine Frascella (Franklinville - Nursing) was 8th in the 1 mile in 6:16.35, Cassandra Ryan (Gloversville - Mechanical Engineering & Tech Management) was 10th in the 400 m in 1:08.69, and Olivia Leonti (Port Byron - Nursing) was 11th in the 800 in 2:46.24.
