Rachel von Hagn (Bath Haverling), George Van Valen (Ithaca), and Holly Fiore (Niagara Falls) have been named the Alfred State Garcia's Barbershop Top Cut Athletes of the Week.
von Hagn, a junior on the western equestrian team, was 1st in both the morning and afternoon shows in the Advanced competition. She helped the team to a pair of reserve hi-point honors.
Van Valen was 6-0 at the NCWA National Duals in Virginia this weekend and is now 26-0 on the season. He earned a 16-0 win over Brad Kata (Central Florida), defeated Joshua Fontanez (Springfield Tech) 15-0, and pinned Rogan Kopper (Washington State) on day one of the tournament. On day two he earned forfeit victories vs. RPI and Toledo and then earned a 12-0 win over Rusty Wilson (Maine). With his victories, Van Valen has 101 career victories (101-21).
Fiore was able to capture the heptathlon title at the Al Hall Freedom Games at Edinboro University on Saturday. She was able to score 1,558 points on the day. Her top scoring event was the high jump where she scored 460 points for a leap of 1.35 m.
