Team Updates

Men's Basketball: 13-7

Hilbert rallied from a 12-point deficit in the final eight minutes of the game to force overtime and then scored the final four points of OT to earn a 80-77 victory over Alfred State in the Pioneers only contest of the week.

Juwan Toliver (Buffalo/McKinley) led the team with 19 points, nine rebounds, and eight assists. Alexshay Pearce (Rochester/Charlotte) finished with 16 points, Dante Jordan (New York/Law & Public) had 12 points and 11 boards, and Marcus Rhett (Middletown) finished with 11. The Pioneers shot 54.5% from the field, 30.8% from three, and 72.2% from the line but were slowed down by 28 turnovers.

Women's Basketball: 6-12

The Pioneers were 0-2 this week. They fell 71-47 at Hilbert and 59-46 at Washington Adventist.

Catherine Bialecki (Alfred Almond) led the team with 23 points and 21 rebounds on the week while Kelsey Shaulis (Ovid/South Seneca) added 21 points. April Acosta (Bronx/Evander Childs) led the team with 12 at Washington Adventist and finished the week averaging eight points per game. Jane Gibson (Bronx/Pelham Prep) chipped in 14 points and 21 rebounds this week as well.

Wrestling: 7-7, 12th at Baldwin Wallace Invitational

George Van Valen (Ithaca) and Mike Galton (Warsaw) placed as the Alfred State wrestling team competed at the John Summa Invitational at Baldwin Wallace on Saturday. Van Valen finished 2nd at 184 lbs. and Galton was 6th at 157 lbs. in the tournament that featured wrestlers from 15 different colleges.

Van Valen opened up the tournament with a 16-0 tech fall of Adam Rigney (Waynesburg) and then advanced to the quarterfinals with a pin of Bret Lane (Ohio Northern). He won 18-0 over Will Amberger (Wabash) in the quarterfinals and won a 7-3 decision over Alex Bair (Ohio Northern) to advance to the finals. In the finals, Van Valen lost a 4-1 decision to Aidan Pasiuk (Wheeling Jesuit).

Galton was 4-2 on the day in the 157 lb. weight class. He defeated Kollin Clark (Wheeling Jesuit) 11-4 and won 15-8 over Lawrence Schrott (Washington & Jefferson) to advance to the quarters. In the quarters he fell to eventual champion Kyle Hatch but was able to bounce back with a pair of victories, 4-1 over Joey Bush (Oswego) and 5-2 Kevin Kelly (Baldwin Wallace) to advance to the 5th place match. In the 5th place match he lost a 9-4 decision to Andrew Munn (Case Western).

Ryan Mattison (Brockport) earned two victories at heavyweight and finished the day 2-2. He pinned Tannex Six (Waynesburg) in 3:36 and pinned Eli Swain (Thiel) in 5:00.

Swimming & Diving: Women 5-2, Men 1-5

The women's swimming & diving team wrapped up the regular season with a 223-56 victory over Franciscan on Saturday afternoon. 

The Pioneers won 14 of the 16 events contested on Saturday afternoon. Lauren Earley (Waterford/Shenendehowa) and Elizabeth Drake (Lansing) were triple individual event winners. Earley won the 50 back in 31.67, the 100 back in 1:11.09, and the 100 IM in 1:10.59 while Drake won the 1,000 free in 12:51.03, the 50 free in 28.19, and the 100 free in 1:02.83. Sarah Stevens (Wellsville) won both the 1 m diving (6 dives) and the 3 m diving (6 dives) competition. She scored 186.37 in the 1 m and 203.02 in the 3 m. Kathryn Lewis (Sanborn/Niagara Wheatfield) won the 200 free in 2:07.61, Kaileigh Lehman (Lowville/Beaver River) won the 100 breast in 1:16.98, and Alina Kisluk (Hamburg) won the 500 free in 6:08.34.

The 400 medley relay team of Earley, Lehman, Stevens, and Lewis won in 4:35.69 while the 400 free relay team of Drake, Hannah Snayczuk (Machias/Pioneer), Elizabeth Furmanski (Albion), and Lewis won in 4:15.61.

Indoor Track & Field: Men T-7th, Women 9th at RIT

The indoor track & field team had several strong performances at the RIT February Invitational. Both the men's and women's 4 x 200 relay teams raced to top ten marks in school history.

The women's 4 x 200 relay team of Sophie Gonzalez, Dominique Shirley, Logan Thierman (Portville), and Alexis Carrington finished 6th overall after crossing the line in 1:56.75. That time puts them 10th in school history. The men's 4 x 200 relay team of Joe Richardson (Geneva), Jhamel Cohen (Brooklyn/South Shore), Marco Marrero (Dychman/City College), and Mandel Green crossed the finish line in 1:37.74 to earn 6th place and establish the 10th fastest time in school history.

Paul Kemsley (Lancaster) continued to impress during his freshmen campaign. He won the weight throw with a toss of 16.01 m to improve on his school record mark. He was also 2nd in the shot put with a toss of 15.12 m. Anders Presthus (Ithaca/Lansing) was 6th in both the shot put (13.16 m) and the weight throw (14.07) while Isiah Richardson (Geneva) was 8th in the long jump with a leap of 6.16 m (1.5 foot personal record)

Sophie Gonzalez was impressive on the women's side with a 3rd place finish in the 200 m (27.18) and a 4th place finish in the 60 m dash (8.22). Katherine Frascella (Franklinville) was 6th in the 3,000 m (12:37.21).
