Team Updates

Baseball: 12-27, 7-11 AMCC

The baseball team wrapped up the season a three non-conference games including their first home game on campus. The Pioneers fell 4-3 to Ithaca, 14-10 at home vs. Elmira, and 12-1 in a rematch vs. Ithaca.

Jack Henby (Hornell) led the team at the plate with a 6 for 14 week (.429 average). Brody Burdett (Scottsdale, AZ) hit .375 while Colin Johnson (Alfred Almond) and David Zuber (Honeoye Falls Lima) both hit two-run homers.

On the mound, Gabe Lewis (Arkport) and Jarrod Deaton (Newburgh Free Academy) were both stellar out of the bullpen. Lewis allowed just three hits in five innings of relief while Deaton tossed 5.1 innings and allowed just one earned run.

The Pioneers finished the season with two more victories than the 2017 season.

Lacrosse: 7-9, 4-1 AMCC, AMCC Showcase Runner-Up

The blue & gold split a pair of games at the AMCC Showcase this week. They defeated Medaille 21-8 in the opening match and then lost a hard fought 15-14 decision to Franciscan.

Versus Medaille, the Pioneers dominated the 2nd quarter as they scored nine straight to take control of the game. Ian Grana (Greece Odyssey) led the team with eight points on four goals and four assists while Branden Dickson (Bath) finished with five goals and two assists. AJ Soto (Churchville) had three goals and two assists, Dominic Arresta (Southampton) and Teddy Alvarado (Hilton) recorded two goals and an assist, and Nate Crowley (Irondequoit) finished with two goals, 21 ground balls and 26 faceoff victories. Nic Covelli (Carmel) had a goal and an asisst while Cade Casey (Plattsburgh/Peru) and Kyle Vandewater (Canandaigua) both netted a goal. Matt Cobb (Churchville) made 12 saves in net.

Dan McCartney scored the game winning goal 3:14 remaining to break at 14-14 tie and lift Franciscan to the victory. The Barons led 4-1 after the 1st, 7-6 at halftime, and Alfred State led 12-11 after three quarters. Joe Johnson (Churchvhille) led the blue & gold with seven goals and one assist while Alvarado had three goals and two assists. Soto finished with two goals and two assists, Dickson had a goal and three assists, and Grana had a goal and two assists. Nick Griffin (Penn Yan) picked up an assist while Crowley led the team with eight ground balls. Cobb made 16 saves in net.

Track & Field: 

The Pioneers had last week off and will spend this week in final preparation for the ECAC Championships to be held May 16-17 at John Hopkins University. A total of 15 athletes will represent the blue & gold. 

Western Equestrian:

Alyssa Beardsley (Letchworth) and Meagan Castoro (Syosset) represented Alfred State this weekend at the IHSA National Championships in Harrisburg, PA. 

Beardsley finished 9th in the advance horsemanship competition while Castoro was 11th in the beginner horsemanship. Beardsley had won the advanced horsemanship competition at the Western Semi-Final Championships to qualify for the Nationals while Castoro was 3rd at the same event to qualify.
