Summer Sports Festival

Alfred State to Host Annual Day Camp and Swim Lessons

The Summer Sports Festival begins on June 25 and runs to July 19.  Camp runs from 9 a.m. - 2:30 p.m. at the Orvis Activities Center, Monday - Thursday.  Camp includes a totally supervised program of daily instruction in a variety of sports, arts, arts & crafts, and recreation, in addition to a daily free swim period each afternoon.

Campers can register for the whole camp or two weeks of the camp (Plan A runs from June 25 - July 5 and Plan B runs from July 10 - July 20).  To attend all four weeks of camp the cost is $180 while two weeks is $120.

The revamped Swimming Lesson program features lessons for children ages three and up. Lessons will be offered in five different levels. Session runs from June 25 - July 5 and Session II runs from July 10 - July 20

Level 1: $50 Session I & $55 Session II ($100 for both) - Lessons offered 9-9:30 am & 9:30-10 am

Designed for those children between the ages of 3 and 5 and is dependent on the child's water experience. This group situation will encompass one instructor per 3 or 4 children and will focus on introductory water skills and safety. Our goal is to acclimate a child into the water environment with an instructor and group setting.

Level 2: $60 Session I & 65 Session II ($110 for both) - Lessons offered 10-11 a.m.

Introduction of primary skills to children 6 years of age or older. This level stresses basic swimming skills, back and front floats, arm and leg motion, coordination, rhythmic breathing, and water safety. One instructor per 3 or 4 children.

Level 3: $60 Session I & 65 Session II ($110 for both) - Lessons offered 10-11 a.m.

Create a more developed swimming technique with stroke development. This class introduces beginner diving, underwater swimming, elementary backstroke, front and back crawl, treading water, butterfly stroke, kick, and body motion. One instructor per 4 or 6 children.

Level 4: $60 Session I & 65 Session II ($110 for both) - Lessons offered 11-Noon

This stroke progression class is designed around those who enjoy being in the deep end while working on swimming skills. Perfect strokes, learn sidestroke, breaststroke, butterfly stroke, advancement of skill diving, and safety skills involved consisting of reaching/throwing extensions. One instructor per 4 or 6 children.

Level 5: $60 Session I & 65 Session II ($110 for both) - Lessons offered 11-Noon

This stroke refinement level builds both confidence and endurance. Strokes are perfected to allow for the fluidity of water movement and to experience swimming for longer distances. This level will expand on the previous levels of stroke mechanics while also introducing proper flip and stroke turns, surface dives, springboard diving and a continuation on safety skills. One instructor per 4 to 6 children.
