Cross Country:
The cross country team had the weekend off but returns to action this weekend at Roberts Wesleyan.
Football: 0-3
The Alfred State football team put together a 4th quarter comeback that fell just short as the University of Rochester defeated the Pioneers 20-14 on a sun drenched Saturday afternoon.
Rochester led 13-0 heading into the 4th quarter when the Pioneers put together their best drive of the game. On a 4th and goal, Dashown Wilson (Bronx/DeWitt Clinton) connected with Jalen Long (Rochester/Bishop Kearney) on a four-yard scoring play. Ryan Shipherd's (Randolph) extra point made it 13-7. Rochester answered with a score of their own only to have Ronnie Clark (Philadelphia/Indian River) made it 20-13 when he scored on a three-yard rush with 5:12 remaining in the game. The Pioneer defense would force Rochester to punt twice in the final 5:12 of the game but the Yellowjacket defense came up with two interceptions in the final two minutes of the game to seal the victory.
Clark led the Pioneers with 82 yards and a score on 15 carries. Kiegan Brown (Cortland) had 57 yards on seven rushes and caught one pass for 44 yards.
Michael Zimmerman (Canandaigua) had 11 tackles (2 for a loss) and an interception (ten of his tackles came in the 1st half). Brandon Davis (Lansing) had nine tackles, Owen Davis (Lansing) had eight, and Austin Parker (Port Byron) had seven. Steve Edwards(Rochester/East) and John Lauretti (Seaford) both recorded sacks.
Men's Soccer: 1-5
The Pioneers split a pair of matches this week versus AMCC opponents. They defeated D'Youville 2-1 but fell to Mt. Aloysius 4-1.
Chris Balys (Holley) scored with 47 seconds remaining to lift the Pioneers to the victory at D'Youville. Alfred State trailed 1-0 until the 77th minute when Ade Adesanya (Brooklyn/Progress) scored after a long pass into the box from Nathan Adamec (Lancaster). Balys scored the game-winner in the final minute when he connected on a header off a loose ball in the corner of the box. Nico Coria (Honeoye Falls Lima) earned his first victory in net by making eight saves.
Adesanya scored the lone goal, his second of the week, as the Pioneers saw the Mounties score three unanswered goals to earn the victory. Adesanya's goal tied the game up but the Alfred State offense couldn't get anything else past the Mt. Aloysius goalie.
Women's Soccer: 2-2-1
Michayla Salatel (Geneseo) gave the blue & gold an early lead 7:30 into the contest when she scored after getting a nice set-up pass from Abby King (Holland). With just under 10 minutes left in the 1st half, the Bears tied it up when Lexi Dean scored her 4th of the season after getting a pass from Rylie Murray. The Bears continued to put pressure on the Pioneers in the 2nd half but the defense anchored by freshman goalie Madison Papaj (Holley) kept the game tied at 1-1 until Brooke Falsion's scored the game winner.
Papaj finished the night with 12 saves in net.
Volleyball: 4-4
The blue & gold were 1-2 this week. They were fell 3-0 to Penn State Behrend and Lancaster Bible but rebounded with a sweep of Penn College.
Madison Webster (Corning) led the team with 26 kills, 37 digs, and 12 service aces. Sarah Raichlin (Binghamton/Chenango Valley) passed out 70 assists, Kiara Perkins (Coudersport, PA) had 25 kills, and Jordan Stauffeneker (Lansing) chipped in 18 digs. The Pioneers collected 30 service aces on the week.
