Pioneers Weekly Update: Edition 7

Cross Country: 

The cross country team welcomed back alumni this weekend in their annual alumni game. The current team raced past Pioneers in their lone action on campus this season.

Football: 0-6

The football team fell 55-14 to SUNY Maritime in front of a jubilant homecoming crowd. In the contest, Jalen Long (Rochester/Bishop Kearney) recorded his 4th 100-yard receiving game in the contest.

The Privateers opened the game with a strong offensive showing, jumping out to a quick 14-0 lead in the 1st quarter before the Pioneers responded quickly with an eight-play, 71-yard drive, capped by a 50-yard touchdown pass from Dashown Wilson (Bronx/DeWitt Clinton) to Long, cutting the Privateers lead to 14-7. Maritime scored 21 unanswered to gain the 42-14 lead. On the second play of the 4th quarter, Wilson connected with Bladimir Vargas (Washington Heights/Law & Public) on a 21-yard scoring pass to get the blue & gold back on the board. The Privateers put the game away with a pair of 2-yard runs in the final five minutes to cap the scoring.

The Pioneers were led offensively by Long, who caught 6 passes for 119 yards and a touchdown. Wilson completed 11 of 24 passes for 158 yards and two touchdowns.

Defensively, Anthony Allen (Staten Island/New Dorp) had seven total tackles for the Pioneers. Kyle Backert (Lancaster) and Chris Plummer (Central Islip) both had six tackles, including one for a loss. Michael Zimmerman (Canandaigua) finished the day with five tackles and an interception.

Men's Soccer: 2-7-2

The Pioneers were 1-0-1 this week. They rallied to tie St. John Fisher 2-2 on Wednesday and then defeated SUNY ESF 2-0.

Fisher jumped out to a 2-0 lead before Justus Hoffmann (Hamburg) cut the lead in half 1:51 later when he beat the keeper for his third goal in the last four games after getting a long set-up pass from Albert Senyah (Long Island/Central Islip). With the Pioneers playing with only 10 players, Ryan Johnson (Sodus) sent a missle of a shot from outside the box that the deflected off the keepers hands and into the back of the net to tie it up with 6:58 remaining. The Pioneers continued to put pressure on but were unable to break the tie. Nico Coria (Honeoye Falls Lima) made five saves in net.

Versus ESF, after nearly 70 minutes of scoreless action, Alfred State was awarded a penalty kick and Senyah delivered with his team leading 5th goal of the season. Senyah was also key in the Pioneers second goal of the game. With 9:27 remaining he slipped a pass to Maliq Burton (Sodus) who found the back of the net with his first career goal. Coria recorded his first career shutout in net by making two saves.

Women's Soccer: 7-2-2

The blue & gold ran their unbeaten streak to six games with a pair of victories over Homecoming 2018. They shutout SUNY ESF 3-0 and rallied for a 2-1 victory over LaRoche.

After a scoreless 1st half that featured a hour weather delay, the Pioneers took control of the game with a pair of quick strikes versus SUNY ESF. Michayla Salatel (Geneseo) scored just 23 seconds into the half after getting a pass from Melissa Mineti (Livonia). Carissa Pompa (Rochester/Mercy) scored 39 seconds later when she found the top shelf after getting a pass from Mackenzie Congdon (Hornell). Abby King (Holland) added an insurance goal 4:09 remaining. Madison Papaj (Holley) made two saves to record the shutout.

LaRoche led 1-0 until the 79th minute when Allison VanScoter (Arkport) tied it up when she capitalized on a penalty kick. With 6:29 remaining, VanScoter stepped up for another PK and was able to find the back of the net to give the Pioneers the lead. Papaj made five saves in net.

The Western Equestrian team opened up their season with a pair of reserve hi-point showings at Alfred University. During the contest three riders qualified for the Regionals at the end of the season.

Amber Laibe (Vestal), Brianna Lasecki (Newark), and Rachel von Hagn (Bath) qualified for Regionals with strong performances. Laibe was 4th in intermediate competition in the AM show and 4th in novice in the PM show, Lasecki was 1st in beginner in the morning and 6th in intermediate in the afternoon, while von Hagn was 3rd in novice in the AM show. Meaghan Castoro (Syosset) was 1st in intermediate in both the AM and PM show, Caylen Bedow (Fillmore) was 1st in advanced in the morning and 3rd in the afternoon, and Jennifer Cirigliano (Brewster) was 1st in beginner in the PM show after finishing 3rd in the AM show.
