Men's Basketball: 6-4

The men's basketball team got contributions from eleven players as they won their third straight, 88-67, over SUNY ESF in their only action of the week.

Dante Jordan (New York/Law & Public) and Kevin Goode (Rochester/Bishop Kearney) led the team with 16 points each. Owen Spencer (Perry) finished with 11 points and seven assists, Brandon Gosley (Valley Stream) recorded career highs with a double-double of 11 points and 10 rebounds. Josh Reding (Spencerport) and Andrew Allman (Bronx Prep Charter) both had eight points while Juwan Toliver (Buffalo/McKinley) finished with a season high 11 assists to go along with five steals and four points.

Alfred State shot 49.3% (35 for 71) from the field, 28% (7 for 25) from three, and 57.9% (11 for 19) from the foul line while ESF shot 41.7% (20 for 48) from the field, 42.3% (11 for 26) from three, and 64% (16 for 25) from the line.

Women's Basketball: 3-7

Skylar Shaulis (Ovid/South Seneca) led three Pioneers in double figures with 16 points as the Pioneers closed out the 2018 portion of their season with a 76-58 loss at Fredonia. Rayanna Anderson (Wellsville) finished with 15 and Kelsey Shaulis (Ovid/South Seneca) added 12.

Men's Swimming & Diving: 5th at Fredonia Invitational

The Pioneers had many strong performances at the three-day Fredonia Invitational this week as they finished 5th with 417 points.

Tim Olin (Perry) was top point earner with 69 points. He was 4th in the 100 back (55.95), 6th in the 200 back (2:04.85), 7th in the 50 free (22.75). He was also part of the 400 medley relay team that finished 4th, the 200 medley relay team that finished 5th, and the 400 free relay team that finished 4th. His time in the 50 free and his performance in the 100 back are new school records.

Ethan Dale (Lock Haven) earned a 4th place finish in the 200 breast (2:13.04), a 5th place finish in the 400 IM (4:22.33), and a 7th place finish in the 100 breast (1:01.91). On the weekend he scored 65 points and established a new top mark in the 200 breast. Austin Eckrich (Churchville Chili) was solid in the distance events and scored 52 points while Nate Miller (Gananda) scored 46.

Women's Swimming & Diving: 4th at Fredonia Invitational

Jessie LaRue (Livonia) continued to swim fast as she scored 74 points as the women's team finished 4th in the three-day Fredonia Invitational with 523 points.

LaRue was 3rd in the 200 back (2:14.60), 4th in the 200 IM (2:20.12), and was 4th in the 100 back (1:03.64). She set new school records in the 200 free, the 100 back, the 50 free, the 200 back, and the 100 free. She was also part of the 3rd place 800 free relay team, the 5th place 200 medley relay team, the 5th place 200 free relay team, and the 5th place 400 free relay team.

Sarah Stevens (Wellsville) was 3rd in the 3m diving (276.70) and 4th in the 1m competition (286.95). She was also 6th in the 200 breast (2:51.28) and part of the 800 free relay, the 200 free relay, and the 400 free relay. Kathryn Lewis (Niagara Wheatfield) scored 60  points on the weekend with strong performances in the distance races while Elizabeth Drake (Lansing) scored 50.  

Men's Indoor Track & Field:

Paul Kemsley (Lancaster) and Jacob Wadsworth (Dansville) earned individual victories as the indoor track & field team opened up the season at the Houghton College December Classic.

Kemsley picked up from where he left off during his freshman campaign by winning the weight throw with a toss of 15.87 m and the shot put with a mark of 14.30 m. Wadsworth opened up his collegiate career by winning the high jump with a leap of 1.92 m

Jacob Drew (Corning Painted Post) was 3rd in the 800 (2:02.34) while Austin Demberg (Westtown/Minisink Valley) was 7th (2:10.04). Matthew Connolly (Elmira Notre Dame) was 4th in the 5000 (16:55.16) while Joe Kretschmar was 7th (18:00.92), and Ryan Lohr (West Seneca) was 8th (18:09.64). Collin Stauffer (LeRoy) was 5th in the triple jump (12.83 m) and 8th in the long jump (6.01 m) while Michael Allender (Youngstown/Lewiston Porter) was 5th in the 60 m dash (7.34).

Tim Berry (Midlakes) and Andrew Ruebenstahl (Washingtonville) led the Alfred State contingent at the Mike Kowal Multi hosted Saturday and Sunday by Edinboro. Berry finished the heptathlon with 3,858 points which earned him 4th place and moved him up higher on the all-time list. He was consistent on Sunday scoring 603 points in the pole vault (3.95 m), 598 points in the 1000 (3:06.95), and 574 points in the 60 hurdles (9.83). On Saturday he scored 580 points in the 60 (7.93) and 576 points in the long jump (5.95 m). Ruebenstahl finished the eight events in 5th place with 3,701 points. He scored 631 points in the pole vault (4.05 m), 619 points in the high jump (1.64 m), and 598 points in the 60 m dash (7.87).

Women's Indoor Track & Field

Highlighting the team's season opening event at Houghton was Sophie Gonzalez (Bronx/Kings Park) and Veronica Dailey (Addison). Gonzalez was 4th in the 300 m (42.95) and 6th in the 60 m dash (8.14) while Dailey was 7th in the 1 mile (5:49.06)

Emily Brigman (Lancaster) led the women's team contingent at the Mike Kowal Multi at Edinboro on Saturday with a 3rd place finish in the pentathlon. She finished the five events with 2,449 points to earn 3rd place out of 15 competitors. She won the 60 m hurdles and set a new school record with a time of 9.93 to score 725 points. She also scored 512 points in high jump with a leap of 1.40 m.

Marissa Sly (N. Tonawanda) was 5th and found her way into the all-time top ten list with 2,123 points. She scored the highest in the 60 m hurdles with a time of 10.43. Julia Yanarella (Wappinger Falls) was 8th (1,796), Katerine O'Buckley (Queens/Francis Lewis) was 9th (1,688), and Katherine Frascella (Franklinville) was 10th (1,644).

Wrestling: 1-1

Ryan Mattison (Brockport) and Mike Galton (Warsaw) claimed individual titles at the 2018 Alfred State Pioneer Open. In total, seven Pioneers earned top three honors.

Mattison won the 13-athlete heavyweight bracket with a perfect 4-0 day with four pins. Mattison led a sweep of the bracket by the Pioneers as Aaron Paddock (Warsaw) finished 2nd and Kyle Fitzgerald (Turin/South Lewis) finished 3rd.

  • Mattison pinned Garrett Smead in 35 seconds to open the day. He then pinned Tyler Vido (Unattached) in 4:52 to advance to the semifinals. In the semis he pinned Anthony Robinson in 2:43 to advance to the finals vs. his teammate Paddock. In the finals, Mattison was able to pin Paddock for the title.

Galton went 4-0 in the 157 lb. weight class to claim the title. He earned a 16-3 victory over Victor Elias (Pitt Bradford), pinned Caleb Palmatier (Jamestown CC) and then pinned Zhang (RPI) to head into his final match vs. another undefeated wrestler Michael Phelps. In his last match he downed Phelps to earn the title. 

Yameek Kendrick (Lisle/Whitney Point) was 2-1 on the day and was 2nd at 141, Jesse Pitoni (Churchville Chili) was 1-1 on the day and finished 2nd at 125, and Devin Horton(Apalachin/Owego Free) was 1-1 in the 165 lb. bracket to earn 2nd.
