Baseball: 1-1

Andrew Santobuono (Unatego) allowed just four hits and struck out 10 in eight innings of work as he led Alfred State to a 10-0 victory over Houghton as the baseball team split an opening day split doubleheader. The Pioneers fell to Messiah 6-1 earlier in the day.

Santobuono, making his collegiate debut didn't walk a batter and allowed just three singles and a triple. Jarrod Deaton  (Newburgh Free) struck out the side in the 9th to end the contest. Danny Doran (Irondequoit) was 3 for 4 with two run homer to pace the 12-hit attack. Colin Johnson (Alfred Almond) and Connor Pingitore (Broadalbin-Perth) were both 2 for 3 while Dan Woodward (Honeoye) and Mike Gibson (Schenectady) were each 2 for 5. 

In the opener, Doran and Johnson both were 2 for 4 for the Pioneers and Laurie drove in the lone run for the Pioneers on a double in the 6th. AJ Gartland (Irondequoit) and Connor Hong(Gates Chili) combined for 5.1 innings of three hit relief.

Men's Basketball: 15-12, ACAA Runner-Up

The men's basketball team played in a pair of thrilling games at the ACAA Championships held at Alfred State this past weekend. They defeated Thomas More (KY) 68-64 in the semifinals in a contest that featured 14 lead changes and seven ties. In the finals, the Pioneers lost on a last second basket 77-75 to SUNY Delhi.

Versus Thomas More, Ryan Gentile (Spencerport) had a huge 1st half as he hit five 3-pointers and scored 17 points. The Pioneers led by as nine in the 1st half and led 35-28 at the break. Gentile hit his 6th 3-pointer to give the Pioneers a 40-30 lead with 16:33 but the Saints went on a 13-2 run to grab a 43-42 lead. The game went back and forth for the next eight minutes and was tied at 50-50 with 6:09 left. Tahaij Lewis (Rochester/Greece Olympia) hit a pair of free throws with 50 seconds remaining to give Alfred State a 5-point lead. TMU responded with a field goal and, after a quick foul, the Pioneers missed a pair of free throws and held a thin three-point lead. Thomas More missed a three-point shot and a foul on the ensuing rebound put ASC back on the line. The Pioneers couldn't add to their lead after a pair of missed foul shots and the Saints rushed down the court and made a layup to pull within one point with 7.4 second remaining. Josh Reding (Spencerport) was fouled on the inbounds pass and made both free throws. TMU  had one last hope when fouled bringing the ball down the court and Damion King hit the first shot before intentionally missing the second without hitting the rim for a turnover. A foul put Juwan Tolliver (Buffalo/McKinley) on the line and he made both shots to insure the Pioneer win.

Gentile led the blue & gold with 20 points while Lewis and Toliver both finished with 14. Lewis had a double-double as he added 11 boards while Toliver passed out six assists. Dante Jordan (New York/Law & Public) finished with 10.

The 2019 ACAA Championship went down to the final seconds as Delhi rallied from an 13-point deficit in the final ten minutes and scored the game winner with 2.7 seconds left to claim the title 77-75.

Delhi jumped out to a 9-2 lead early but the Pioneers chipped away and took their first lead of the game, 14-13, with just over 11 minutes remaining in the 1st half. Alfred State led 29-24 with 3:16 remaining after going on a 13-5 run. The game went back and forth the rest of the half and the Pioneers went into the break with a slight 36-34 advantage. The Pioneers added to their lead in the 2nd half and led 65-52 with 10:13 left before the Broncos went on a 15-4 run to pull within two, 69-67, with 5:17 left. Alfred State pushed the lead back to eight, 75-67, with 3:35 remaining but Delhi would keep the Pioneers off the board the rest of the way. Fragale hit one of two foul shots with 1:36 remaining to tie the game at 75-75. In the ensuing possession, the Pioneers could not get a shot off and turned the ball over on a shot clock violation. After a timeout, Delhi missed their first two scoring opportunities and milked the clock down to the final seconds when Fragale was able to drive the ball into the paint for the winning basket with 2.7 seconds remaining. The Pioneers advanced the ball to half court and called a timeout with 1.8 remaining and a last second three point attempt hit the front iron as time expired.

Lewis finished the day with another double-double. He had 23 points (11 for 12 from the foul line) and 15 boards. Toliver had 14 points and seven assists, Jordan finished with 13, and Kevin Goode (Rochester/Bishop Kearney) came off the bench and had 10 points.

Lewis was named to the All-Tournament team for his solid play.

Women's Basketball: 6-18

The women's basketball team saw their season come to an end in the ACAA semifinals. Thomas More (KY) used a balanced attack as they improved to 26-0 with a 106-56 victory.

Kelsey Shaulis (Ovid/South Seneca) led the Pioneers with 18 points and six assists while Rayanna Anderson (Wellsville) finished with 17 points and eight assists. Jordyn Pettit (Wellsville) chipped in eight points and 10 boards. Shaulis was named to the All-Tournament team.

Men's Diving:

Sophomore diver Austin Miller (Hornell) will compete in this week's NCAA Region 4 Championship. Miller will compete on both the 1m and 3m boards in the event that will take place at RIT.

Lacrosse: 0-1 

Keuka used a huge 2nd quarter as they defeated Alfred State 17-5 in the season opener for both teams. The Wolves outscored the Pioneers 10-1 in the decisive 2nd quarter. 

AJ Soto (Churchville) and Tyler Baker (Rome Free) both scored a pair for the Pioneers. Matt Cobb (Churchville) made 20 saves in net for Alfred State.

Indoor Track & Field: 

A contingent of Pioneers will head to New York City this weekend to compete in the 2019 ECAC Championships at the Armory. The two-day meet starts on Friday afternoon.

Wrestling: 17th at NCAA Mideast Regional

The wrestling team competed at the NCAA Mideast Regionals for the first time this weekend. The Pioneers scored four points in the competition.

Ryan Mattison (Brockport) was 2-2 in the heavyweight competition. He started the day with a tough 3-1 overtime loss to Thomas Marretta (College of New Jersey) but rebounded with a pair of victories. He pinned Leon Taryan (Hunter) in 36 seconds and then earned a 12-4 major decision over William McGinley (Ursinus). His tournament came to an end with another tight 4-3 loss to Marretta.

Mattison was one of six Pioneers that competed in the Regionals. Top three finishers in this tournament that featured 18 teams advance to the NCAA Division III Championships.
