Baseball: 1-5

The baseball team opened up their spring break trip on a Saturday at Southern Virginia. The Knights took both ends of the doubleheader 7-0 and 11-7.

In the opener Riley Daniels threw a seven-inning no-hitter. He walked two and struck out six in the contest.

In the nightcap, the Pioneers couldn't overcome an early deficit. Tim Holler (Brewster) finished 2 for 4 with 2 RBI while Connor Pingitore (Broadalbin Perth) was 2 for 2.  Brody Burdett (Scottsdale, AZ) hit his 2nd homer of the season, a two-run shot in the contest. AJ Gartland (Irondequoit) kept the Pioneers in the game with 4.1 innings of relief. He allowed just the three runs in the 6th inning. He walked one and struck out five.

Lacrosse: 1-2

In another tight battle between Alfred State and Hiram (OH), the Terriers scored on the first possession of overtime to earn the 9-8 victory on Saturday. A game earlier in the week vs. Cazenovia was postponed due to the weather.

The Pioneers started off fast and jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first 11:35 of the game as five different scorers found the back of the net. Hiram slowed down the Alfred State offense and fought back. They trailed 5-3 after the 1st, 5-4 at half, and 7-6 after three. The Terriers took the lead but Joe Johnson (Churchville) scored with 1:16 left to tie it and the game went to extra time. On the first possession of OT, Hiram was able to score the game winner.

Johnson finished with a hat trick while AJ Soto (Churchville) scored twice. Tucker Sutphen (Brockport) led the team with five ground balls to go along with a goal and an assist. Matt Cobb (Churchville) made 14 saves in the game.

Softball: 1-3

The softball team opened up their 2019 season with a pair of doubleheaders at the Gene Cusic Classic in Ft. Myers, FL. The Pioneers defeated the University of St. Joseph (CT) 3-2 but fell 12-4 to Martin Luther (MN), 11-6 to Curry (MA), and 9-1 to Kenyon (OH).

In their victory, the Pioneers rallied from a 2-0 deficit for the victory. Marissa Varela (Egg Harbor Twp, NJ) and Ashley Peterson (Valley Central) connected on back-to back RBI singles to tie the game in the 6th. In the 7th, Alfred State loaded the bases with no outs and won the game when the Blue Jays threw a wild pitch that allowed Angela Martone (Candor) to score the winning run.

Varela has had a hot start to the season. She is 8 for 12 with 7 RBI. Arianna Trauggott (Elmira) is 4 for 10 and connected on a two-run homer. Brittany Fisher (Indianapolis, IN) is 3 for 10 and earned the victory with a complete game effort vs. St. Joseph.
