Cross Country:

The Pioneers head to Erie, PA (Penn State Behrend) this weekend to compete in the AMCC Championships.

Football: 3-5, 1-2 ECFC

The football team used a big 2nd half as they defeated Castleton 21-15 on Saturday afternoon.

Castleton kicked a pair of field goals in the 1st half and led 6-0 after 30 minutes. The Pioneer offense got going in the 2nd half as they put together a 99-yard drive in their opening possession. Dashown Wilson (Brooklyn/DeWitt Clinton) connected with Darius Nichols (Brooklyn/South Shore) on a 19-yard diving catch to give Alfred State their first lead. The Spartans answered right back but after a 68-yard kickoff return by Derek Ecklund (Panama) the Pioneers scored two plays later on a one-yard run by Jake Palmer (Voorheesville) to make it 13-12. Castleton kicked their 3rd field goal of the game to make it 15-13 in the 4th quarter but the Pioneers rallied right back and took the lead for good when Wilson connected with Shy'rel Broadwater (Syracuse/Cicero North Syracuse) on a 32-yard touchdown pass play. The two-point conversion between the same two made it 21-15 with 5:09 remaining.

The Pioneer defense did the rest as they stopped the Spartans on a pair of possessions in the final 5:09 to seal the victory. On the final meaningful play of the game, Brockton Weist (Harpursville) and Robert Augustin (Brooklyn/Midwood) combined on a sack on a 4th and 4 at the Castleton 47.

Wilson finished the day 11 for 21 for 172 yards and two scores. Broadwater recorded his second straight 100-yard receiving game finishing with seven grabs for 125 yards and a score. The young Pioneer defensive backfield was big in the game. Julian Marun (Baldwin) and Rylie Van Fleet (Maine Endwell) both finished with a team high eight tackles. Van Fleet was credited with five pass break-ups while Marun had three. Weist finished with seven tackles, two sacks and a forced fumble while Paul Portorreal (Buffalo/Cheektowaga) had seven tackles, a sack, and a forced fumble.
