Pioneers Busy in the Community this Fall

Alfred State student-athletes have not only been competing on the court or field this fall. In season and out of season student-athletes have been busy helping others in the local community.

The volleyball team hosted their annual Pink Pride game last week (October 30th) as they raised funds by selling t-shirts and holding a basket raffle to benefit Allegany Cancer Services. During the Pink Pride event, the Student Athlete Advisory Committee presented a check for $100 raised from 50/50 raffles at football games to benefit the cause.

Numerous athletes spent Halloween afternoon working with the Center for Intercultural Unity to fill 2,500 comfort bags in conjunction with SUNY's Got Your Back. The bags will be distributed to victims of violence throughout New York. Athletes from the women's soccer, men's soccer, cross country, track & field, volleyball, western equestrian, wrestling, and more participated in the event.

The baseball team volunteered and helped execute the YMCA's annual Halloween Party. 

The swimming & diving team did a variety of jobs at the annual Ridgewalk Run and Walk in Wellsville. 

The western equestrian team helped clean up at the McKinney Stables at Empire City Farms in Cuba. The team received a tour and a history lesson, discussed the restoration process and projects done to date, helped with cleaning up areas, and worked on restoring windows. The Stables are listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

The Pioneer Excellence Series has hosted two speakers this semester. Jonah Bayliss, a former Division III baseball player that made it to the major leagues, spoke on motivation and perseverance and assistant athletic trainer Kylie Bierman who spoke on an Athlete's energy on and off the field.
