Baseball: 1-1

The baseball team split a pair of games this past week as they opened up their 2021 season. The Pioneers defeated Wells 9-2 on Thursday and fell 8-1 at Houghton on Friday. Games over the weekend were postponed due to wintry weather.

The Pioneers scored single runs in the 3rd and 4th and after Wells tied it up in the bottom of the 4th, Alfred State took the lead for good with a five run 5th. They added a pair of insurance runs in the 7th. 

Justin LoTemple (Greece Athena) was 3 for 4 with 3 RBI to lead the offense while Jack Henby (Hornell) was 2 for 3 with two runs scored. LoTemple and Nick Serce (Irondequoit) both hit solo homers in the 7th. On the mound, AJ Gartland (Irondequoit) allowed just four hits and two unearned runs in six solid innings of work. He walked two and struck out 10. Connor Hong (Gates Chili) allowed one hit and struck out one in two innings of relief and Ryan Demitrovic (Churchville Chili) struck out three in the 9th.

Men's Basketball:

After a few postponements and cancellations, the men's basketball team is slated to play for the first time this week as they play a home-and-home with Hilbert. They head to Hilbert on Thursday before hosting the Hawks on Saturday.

Women's Basketball:

The women's basketball team has not been able to play any of their scheduled games but will take the court tomorrow (3/16) in a Blue vs. White Intrasquad starting at 6 p.m.

Softball:

The Pioneers open up the 2021 season this week with a pair of road doubleheaders vs. Empire 8 competition. They travel to Houghton on Thursday and Elmira on Saturday.

Swimming & Diving:

The swimming & diving team dive into their first competition of 2021 on Saturday when they compete at NCAA DI Niagara University. 

Men's Track & Field:

Cameron Chambers (East Rochester) and Jesse Johnson (Horseheads) each won individual events as the Track & Field team opened up their season at the Houghton College Highlander Invitational.

Chambers registered the top time in the 800 m run, besting a field of 19 athletes in 2:00.74 while Johnson won the high jump with a leap of 1.81 m. Johnson was also 5th in the 60 m hurdles (9.64).

Esaias Brumfield (Warners/West Genesee) was 3rd in the 60 m dash (7.37), Corey Seymour (Dryden) was 5th in the long jump (6.17 m) and 8th in the 200 m (24.32), Shawn Rosa (Middletown) was 5th in the 400 m (53.78), Derek Walter (Lancaster) was 6th (9.74) in the 60 m hurdles, and Waleed Muhammad (Manhattan/LaSalle Academy) was 8th in the long jump (5.76 m). The 4x200 relay team of Cameron Howard (Brockport), Seymour, Johnson, and Brumfield finished in 1:37.60.

Women's Track & Field:

Emma Taggart (New Windsor, MD) led the track & field team as they competed for the first time in over a year at the Houghton College Highlander Invitational.

Taggart won the high jump with a leap of 1.54 m. She was also 3rd in the 60 m hurdles with a time of 9.82. This was after she posted the fastest time in the preliminaries, 9.70, to improve her school record time.

Alyssa Delany (Hornell) was 2nd in the long jump (4.97 m) and 5th in the 60 m hurdles (10.26) while Marina Miketish (Olean) was 4th in the high jump (1.49m) and 8th (11.32) in 60 m hurdles. Chivonna Reed (Rochester/Fairport) was 5th (1.44 m) in the high jump, Madeline Cole (Homer) was 9th in the long jump (4.52 m), and Katherine O'Buckley (Queens/Francis Lewis) was 9th in the 400 m (1:11.63).
