Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Second Half Surge Lifts Hilbert Over Alfred State

ALFRED, N.Y. - Hilbert College used a big second half push to get by Alfred State (73-60) in non-conference men's basketball action this afternoon.

The Hawks improve to 3-2 overall just as they head to Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference action this week.

Neither team could muster any traction on the court as both teams took blows early having to sit key players to early foul trouble.

Hilbert forced four tied scores and Alfred State forced three while they each battled back and took the lead in the first half five times a piece.

The Pioneers were pushing the tempo scoring in transition and pressuring the ball in full court. Both team's were whistled for seven turnovers in the first 10 minutes of action, though a few of those were tagged after an offensive charge stopped the clock.

Thanks to 5-of-6 shooting from the foul line and Hunter Martineau's deep shot beyond the arc, Hilbert knotted the game (17-17) at 8:07.  Dre' Turnipseed found the bottom of the net and Alex Karamanos added another free throw but the Pioneers regained the lead (20-21) at 6:11.

Masia Phillips zeroed-in on his range and put Hilbert up again,  yet the hosts went 3-for-3 from deep taking back the lead (27-30) at 2:52.

Javon Roberts scored an "And-One" knotting things up one more time at 30-30 before Phillips lifted Hilbert by two less than 20 seconds later.  Both teams went to the locker room deadlocked at 32-all.

Alfred State shot better from the floor (13-27 & 4-11) than Hilbert (11-26 & 3-8) but the Hawks went 7-for-9 at the foul line (vs 2-for-5 for A-State).

The Pioneers jumped ahead first at the start of the second session, but then found themselves in a hole early.

Phillips' 3-point play lifted the Hawks by 5 points which lasted less than two minutes as Alfred State took a 40-39 lead five minutes into the half.

Martineau's deep hit and Phillips' score off the bounce started the final push for Hilbert.  The Hawks went on a 15-6 run and built their first double figure lead in the game at (57-46) at 6:10.

Only once did Alfred State cut the score to under ten, but Phillips hit another 3-pointer to lift the Hawks back to double digits.

Hilbert closed the game going 7-for-8 from the charity stripe to ensure the non-conference road win.

Phillips led three Hawks who reached double figure scoring. He and Martineau (six assists, six rebounds) combined for a 5-for-8 day beyond the arc (10-17 from floor)  with Phillips reaching for 19 points, just two more than Martineau.

Joseph Braniecki notched a double double with 12 points (6-for-9 from field) and ten rebounds.

Ryan Hogan came off the bench to hit 6-for-6 from the foul line as Keith Jackson crashed for a team-high four offensive rebounds helping the Hawks build a 40-34 edge on the glass.

Hilbert returns to action midweek with a Buffalo Cup contest at D'Youville College (2-1) Wednesday, November 28.
