Pioneers Stay Hot, Sweep Presque Isle

The Alfred State baseball team continued their solid play with a pair of victories, 5-0 and 6-2, over Maine Presque Ilse on Sunday afternoon. The Pioneers have now won eight of their last nine games.

In the opener, Conner Odonoghue (Avon) fired a complete game one-hitter and Thomas Shofi (Carmel) and Jose Martinze (Queens/Newtown) provided the offense.

O'Donoghue allowed just a lead off single in the 7th inning and one walk while striking out six to earn the victory.

Shofi doubled in the 1st inning to drive in Pedro Mora (Manhattan/AP Randolph) and scored on a RBI single by Dan Woodward (Honeoye). Shofi doubled again in the 3rd and scored on a wild pitch. Martinez put it out of reach one batter later with a 2-RBI double. Shofi was the lone Pioneer with multiple hits finishing 2 for 3.

The Owls got on the board in the 1st inning of the nightcap but the Pioneers would score the games next six runs. Michael English (Livonia) and Andy Pichardo (Corona/Academy of American Studies) delivered RBI singles in the 1st, Cullen Franz (Cazenovia) added a RBI single in the 2nd, Shofi had a 2-RBI double in the 5th, and Jesse Swan capped the Pioneers scoring with a RBI single to score Shofi.

The Owls cut the lead to 6-2 in the 6th but could not get anything more off of Jake Remington (Letchworth). Remington tossed a complete game six-hitter to earn the victory.

Franz finished 3 for 4 with a RBI, Shofi was 2 for 3 with 2 RBI, and English was 2 for 3 with a RBI. Matt Cauchon led the Owls with a 3 for 4 day.
