Pioneers Make it Two Straight

The Alfred State baseball team collected their second straight victory, 10-4 over Pitt Bradford, on Sunday afternoon. The Pioneers collected 10 hits in the contest and Lucas Cornell (Alfred Almond) pitched a solid 7.1 innings.

The Pioneers got on the board in the 1st when they capitalized on a Panther error to plate two runs. In the 2nd, Colin Johnson (Alfred Almond) collected a RBI groundout to make it 3-0.

After the Panthers got on the board in the 4th, Danny Doran (Irondequoit) made it 4-1 with a sac fly in the bottom half of the inning. Dalton Renn collected a RBI double and scored on an error in the 6th to cut it to 4-3 but Thomas Shofi (Carmel) collected a two-run single to regain the three-run advantage.

John Morgan hit a RBI double in the 8th but once again the Pioneers answered in the bottom half of the inning. Andy Pichardo (Queens/Academy of American Studies) scored on a wild pitch, David Zuber (Honeoye Falls Lima) collected a RBI single, and Cullen Franz (Cazenovia) lifted his 9th homer of the season, a two-run shot.

Cornell allowed four hits and two earned runs in 7.1 innings of work. He walked five and struck out eight. Rafael Perozo (Bronx/St. Raymond) got the final four outs to earn his first save.

Franz was 2 for 4 with 2 RBI, Zuber was 2 for 4 with a RBI, and Shofi was 2 for 5 with 2 RBI. Mike Gibson (Schectady) also collected two hits.

Renn was the lone Panther (11-20) with multiple hits finishing 2 for 4 with a RBI and three runs scored.

The Pioneers hit the road this week for four games starting with a 6 p.m. contest at Penn State DuBois on Wednesday evening.
