Pioneers Begin Southern Swing

Salisbury University used strong pitching as they defeated Alfred State 2-0 and 9-1 as the Pioneers opened up their spring break trip.

In the opener, Matt Isham (Maine Endwell) and Angel Victorino (Harvest Collegiate) combined to keep the Sea Gulls off the board for the first six innings while Wes Whitlock threw a complete game two-hitter. Salisbury broke the scoreless tie with two outs in the 7th when Justin Meekins hit a RBI triple and scored on a pinch hit single on Jack Decker.

Isham allowed four hits in four innings of work while Victorino allowed one hit in 1.2 innings. Whitlock allowed just two hits and walked two while striking out 12. Dan Woodward (Honeoye) and Brody Burdett (Scottsdale, AZ) collected singles for the blue & gold.

In the nightcap, Salisbury scored two in the 1st and four in the 2nd inning to take control of the game. Connor Reeves allowed two hits and one earned run in eight innings of work to earn the victory. Connor Pingitore (Amsterdam/Broadalbin-Perth) singled and scored on a RBI single by Lucas Cornell (Alfred Almond) in the 4th inning.

The Pioneers travel to Tampa, FL and the New York Yankees spring training complex for their next game on Monday. First pitch vs. New York University at 3 p.m.
