Pioneers Race Past Thoroughbreds

The Alfred State baseball team put together a solid team effort as they defeated Skidmore 11-3 on Friday as they continued play in Ft. Myers, FL at the Gene Cusic Classic. The Pioneers collected 13 hits in the contest and Garrett Mack (Avon) tossed a complete game three hitter.

The Pioneers got on the board in the 3rd when Jack Henby (Hornell) scored on a double play. In the 4th, Danny Doran (Irondequoit) made it 2-0 when he scored on a nother double play. In the 6th, the Pioneers plated three more runs on a RBI single by Doran, a RBI double by David Zuber (Honeoye Falls Lima), and a RBI single by Nick Geyer (Newburgh Free Academy).

The Thoroughbreds got on the board in the 6th when Shawn Klier hit a two-run home run. The Pioneers added to their lead and put the game out reach with three more runs in the 7th. Dan Woodward (Honeoye) collected a RBI single and Connor Pingitore (Amsterdam/Broadalbin-Perth) collected a RBI fielders choice. Woodward made it 8-2 when he scored on a throwing error. A sac fly by Andrew Knight in the 7th capped the scoring for Skidmore. In the 8th, the Pioneers scored three runs on a wild pitch and a two-run throwing error.

Geyer led the Pioneers 13-hit attack with a 3 for 5 day while Woodward and Doran were each 2 for 4.

Mack earned his first victory of the season with a complete game three-hitter. He allowed three earned runs while walking one and striking out six.

The Pioneers conclude their spring break trip on Saturday with a 9 a.m. battle with Lakeland.
