Big Early Innings Lift Houghton

Houghton scored six in the 1st inning and three more in the 2nd as the Highlanders earned a 13-6 victory over Alfred State on Monday afternoon.

The Highlanders scored six runs on six hits in the 1st inning as they sent 11 batters to the plate. In the 2nd, the continued to put the pressure on plating three runs on four hits. They made it 12-0 with three more in the 5th inning. 

Alfred State got on the board in the 7th with three runs. Jack Henby (Hornell) hit a RBI single and Mike Gibson (Schenectady) followed with a two run single up the middle. Houghton added an unearned run in the bottom half of the inning. In the 9th, Danny Doran (Irondequoit) drew a bases loaded walk while David Zuber (Honeoye Falls Lima) delivered a two-RBI single to center.

Ethan Durywa led the Highlanders (9-7) 16-hit attack with a 3 for 4, 2 RBI day. David Wessells, Taylor Huntsman, John Zamites, and Jeremy Newswanger all collected two hits. Victor Cavalieri allowed just one hit in five innings of work. He walked two and struck out 11.

Henby was the lone Pioneer that finished with multiple hits. He finished the day 2 for 3 with a RBI.

The Pioneers scheduled doubleheader on Tuesday at Medaille has been moved to Wednesday. The AMCC contests will now be played at Canisius College starting at 3 p.m.
