Pingitore Collects Four Hits at Altoona

Connor Pingitore (Amsterdam/Broadalbin-Perth) collected four hits as the Alfred State baseball team played a AMCC doubleheader at Penn State Altoona on Friday afternoon. The Lions collected 26 hits in a sweep, 13-1 and 9-6.

Altoona (6-10, 3-1 AMCC) scored three in the first keyed by a 2 RBI double by Catch Cumming to take the early lead. They added a single run in the 3rd before Cumming and Dylan Bates each collected 2-RBI hits in the 4th to make it 8-0. Pingitore got the Pioneers on the board in the 5th when he singled home Dan Woodward (Honeoye). Cumming collected his third RBI hit in the 5th to key a three-run inning. The Lions two more runs in the 6th on a pair of RBI doubles.

 
Cumming finished the day 3 for 3 with 5 RBI to lead the Lions 14-hit attack. Altoona collected six extra base hits in the game.
 
The Lions pitching staff held the Pioneers to just four singles. George Stiuso earned the win with four innings of four hit work. He walked four and struck out six.
 
Pingitore gave the Pioneers (8-13, 3-3 AMCC) an early 1-0 lead in the 1st inning of game two when he doubled to left field to score Danny Doran (Irondequoit). Doran had led off the game with a double. Altoona answered right back with a RBI double by Hunter Breon and a two run homer by Jim Shomberg. Doran cut the lead to 3-2 when he drew a bases loaded walk in the 2nd. Peter Jacobs gave the Lions a four-run lead in the bottom half of the 2nd when he lifted a three-run homer to center. 
 
David Zuber (Honeoye Falls Lima) scored on a fielding error in the 3rd and then stole home in the 4th to make it 6-4. Shomberg and Cumming each collected RBI hits in the 5th give Altoona a 8-4 lead before Pingitore singled to right center in the 6th to make it a three-run game. Jacobs collected a RBI single in the 8th to add an insurance run. Zuber hit a solo homer in the 9th to lead off the inning but the Pioneers could not get anything else going.
 
Pingitore led the Pioneers with a 3 for 5, 2 RBI day while Doran was 2 for 4 with a RBI. Jarod Deaton (Newburgh Free) allowed just three hits and one run in four innings of relief to keep Alfred State in the contest.
 
Jacobs was 4 for 5 with 4 RBI while Shomberg was 3 for 4 with 3 RBI. Sawyer Kline came out of the pen for the Lions and tossed 4.2 innings of relief to earn the win while Tyler Manger got the final five outs to earn the save.
 
The blue & gold continue AMCC play on Sunday when they travel to LaRoche to take on the defending champs. First pitch of the doubleheader is slated for 1 p.m.
