Pioneers Tripped up in Extra Innings

The Alfred State baseball team was tripped up in an 11-inning battle at Keuka on Wednesday. The Wolves scored two runs in the 11th to earn the 10-9 victory in a non-conference contest.

Colin Johnson (Alfred Almond) connected on a 2-RBI double in the 1st to get the Pioneers on the board. The Wolves answered back with four runs in their half of the inning. David Zuber (Honeoye Falls Lima) cut the lead to 4-3 with a solo homer to left field in the 3rd. After Keuka added a run in the 3rd, Alfred State tied it up in the 4th when Danny Doran (Irondequoit) lifted a sac fly and Connor Pingitore (Amsterdam/Broadalbin-Perth) followed with a RBI single through the left side. The Pioneers built a three-run lead, 8-5, with three runs in the 5th inning. Jack Henby (Hornell) had a RBI double, Mike Gibson (Schenectady) executed a squeeze bunt, and Josh Laurie (LeRoy) capped the inning with a RBI single.

The game remained 8-5 until the 8th inning when Keuka started their comeback. They scored a pair of runs in the 8th and tied the game with a one-out RBI single by Dan Bamann with one out in the 9th. Dan Woodward (Honeoye) sent the game into extra innings when he threw out the would be game winning run at the plate on the Bamann hit.

After a scoreless 10th inning, Zuber gave the Pioneers a 9-8 advantage with a RBI single to center. Once again Keuka rallied and scored a pair of runs with one out in the 11th to earn the victory. A pair of errors allowed John Rizzo and Bamann to score.

Henby led the Pioneers (10-16) 11-hit attack with a 3 for 5 day. Pingitore was 2 for 4 with a RBI, Johnson was 2 for 5 with 2 RBI, and Zuber was 2 for 6 with 2 RBI.

Kyle Colegrove was 2 for 3 with 3 RBI to pace the Wolves (6-8) offense. Bamann was 3 for 5 with a RBI, Rizzo was 3 for 6 with a RBI, and Tyler Freedman was 2 for 5 with a RBI. Kevin Franz earned the win with two innings of work. He allowed two hits, one run, and struck out one.

The blue & gold are back in AMCC action on Saturday when they travel to Penn State Behrend. The doubleheader is slated for 1 p.m.
