Big Innings Cost Pioneers

Penn State Behrend used a six-run 3rd inning in the 1st game and a seven-run 5th inning in a AMCC sweep of Alfred State on Friday afternoon. The Lions took the opener 7-0 and the nightcap 12-4. Alfred State is now 10-18 overall (5-5 AMCC) while Behrend is 14-9 overall (5-3 AMCC).

Jack Herzing tossed a one-hit complete game shutout for Behrend in the opener. He didn't walk a batter and struck out sixteen. He allowed on a 6th inning single to Brody Burdett (Scottsdale, AZ). Justin Foreman led the Lions with a 2 for 2, 1 RBI day.

The Lions got on the board in the 1st when they scored an unearned run. In their big 3rd inning they took advantage of a pair of Pioneer two out errors. The Lions collected six hits following the errors and scored six runs. 

The Pioneers got on the board first in the nightcap when Burdett single down the right field line to score Colin Johnson (Alfred Almond). The Lions took the lead with a pair of runs in the 3rd and added to their lead with another two runs in the 4th. They put the game out of reach with seven runs in the 5th fueled by three Pioneer errors. David Zuber (Honeoye Falls Lima) collected a two run single up the middle in the 6th and Ryan Santos (New York/Business of Sports School) stole home in the 8th to cut in the lead but the Pioneers would not get any closer. The Lions added another insurance run in the 8th.

Zuber was the lone Pioneer with multiple hits finishing 2 for 4. Scott Sada led the Lions 14-hit attack with a 4 for 5 day with 2 RBI. Alex Hajduk went six innings and allowed four hits and three earned runs to earn the victory. He walked one and struck out eight.

The Pioneers are currently scheduled to play again next Saturday when they host Mt. Aloysius in a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
