Mounties Sweep Pioneers

Both teams plated two runs in the 1st inning. Matt McCorut hit a sac fly and TJ Wardwell executed a squeeze bunt to give the Mounties the early lead but David Zuber (Honeoye Falls Lima) had a RBI ground out and Colin Johnson (Alfred Almond) hit a sac fly to tie it right back up. MAC took the lead for good in the 3rd when Wardwell hit a RBI double down the left field line and Daniel Singer followed with a sac fly. Jack Henby (Hornell) made it 4-3 with a RBI single to left in the 4th but the Pioneers could never get the equalizer. 

After Henby's single in the 4th, Douglas Cannon retired the final 10 batters of the game. He finished his complete game effort allowing five hits and three runs while walking one and striking out four. McCourt was the only player in the game with multiple hits finishing 2 for 2 with a RBI.

Jarrod Deaton (Newburgh Free Academy) was stellar out of the pen for Alfred State. He tossed three scoreless innings allowing just two hits while striking out five. Johnson gunned down two base runners and was 1 for 2 with a RBI.

The second game was scoreless until the 4th as neither team could take advantage of their chances. Johnson gave the Pioneers the lead with two out in the 4th when he lifted a bases loaded double off the left field fence to make it 3-0. Mount Aloysius answered back with four runs in the 5th to take their first lead of the contest. Nick Belka hit a RBI double, Jeremy Iellimo scored on a wild pitch, McCourt hit a RBI triple, and Singer executed a squeeze bunt. In the bottom of the 5th, Nick Geyer (Newburgh Free Academy) tied it with a squeeze bunt of his own.

The Mounties took control of the game with three runs in the 6th inning. They scored on a throwing error, a wild pitch, and double steal. MAC added single runs in the 7th (on a double play groundout), and the 8th (on a RBI single by McCourt), and scored seven times in the 9th. Connor Pingitore (Amsterdam/Broadalbin-Perth) hit a sac fly in the 9th to cap the scoring.

Henby led the team with a 3 for 4 day whie Pingitore was 2 for 3 with a RBI. Dan Woodward (Honeoye) was 2 for 4 and Johnson was 2 for 5 with 3 RBI.

McCourt was 3 for 4 with 2 RBI, Joe Hudak was 2 for 3, and Belka was 2 for 5 with 3 RBI. Michael McCourt came out of the bullpen and pitched five innings of relief to earn the win. He allowed three hits and one run while walking one and striking out two.

 

The blue & gold are scheduled to head to Medaille on Tuesday for a 1 p.m. AMCC doubleheader with the Mavericks.
