Johnson Homers in Battle with Ithaca

Colin Johnson (Alfred Almond) hit a two-run homer as Alfred State battle Ithaca on Monday afternoon at Hoy Field on the campus of Cornell University. The Pioneers couldn't fully rally from a four-run deficit and fell 4-3 to the Bombers.
 
Jake Lynch broke a scoreless game in the 4th when he lifted a sac fly to left. In the 5th, the Bombers added two more runs. They scored following a throwing error and then made it 43-0 when Adam Gallagher connected on a RBI single to left. In the 6th, Andrew Wollner made it 4-0 with a RBI single to left.
 
Johnson connected on a two-run homer, his fourth of the season, to left field to get the Pioneers on the board in the 7th inning. His homer came on a 0-2 pitch and scored Connor Pingitore (Amsterdam/Broadalbin-Perth) who led off the inning by being hit by a pitch. In the 9th, Alfred State cut the lead to one when Miguel Reicino (Woodhaven/Benjamin Cardozo) scored on a throwing error. With the tying run on 1st and one out, Matt Eiel recorded the final two outs to close the game.
 
Jack Henby (Hornell) finished the day 2 for 4 on the day while Johnson was 1 for 4 with 2 RBI. AJ Gartland (Irondequoit) allowed three earned runs in 5.1 innings of work. He walked two and struck out three. Gabe Lewis (Arkport) went 2.2 innings of two hit relief.
 
Domenic Boresta, Andrew Bailey, and Cam Fuoti all finished 2 for 4 for Ithaca (21-14). The Bombers collected 11 hits in the contest. Emmett Dunn pitched 8.1 innings to earn the win allowing two earned runs on five hits. He didn't walk a batter and struck out seven. Eiel got the final two outs to earn his first save.
 
The Pioneers are slated to play Elmira tomorrow afternoon at 4 p.m. Prior to the game the team will honor the seniors playing in their final home game.
