Elmira Rallies to Take Wild Affair

Elmira rallied for three runs in the 9th and scored four in the 10th to win a wild 14-10 game over Alfred State on Tuesday. The game featured 24 runs, 27 hits, and featured 39 players.
 
The Soaring Eagles got on the board in the 1st when Bryce Plante scored on a throwing error and Nick Sampogna followed with a RBI single to center. In the 3rd, the Pioneers collected a pair of two-out hits to grab the lead. Connor Pingitore (Amsterdam/Broadalbin Perth) delivered a two-run single to left and David Zuber (Honeoye Falls Lima) followed with a two run homer to left to make it 4-2.
 
Elmira took back in the 5th inning when they collected four hits and scored three runs. Plante collected a RBI single to center, Conor Bawiec hit a sac fly to tie it, and Denis Rudolph gave the Soaring Eagles the lead with a RBI single to left. Zuber keyed a three-run 6th inning to give the Pioneers back the lead. He stroked a double over the centerfielders head and scored on a wild pitch. Brody Burdett (Scottsdale, AZ) made it a two-run lead with a two-out single to right center.
 
Tommy Fogarty hit a RBI triple in the 7th and tied the game up when he scored on a throwing error on the same play. In the bottom of the inning, Jack Henby (Hornell) doubled and went to third on a throwing error and scored on a balk to make it 8-7. The Pioneers added a pair of runs in the 8th on a pair of RBI singles by Ryan Santos (New York/Business of Sports School) and Henby. 
 
In the top of the 9th, Elmira rallied for three runs to tie it up. Matt van Muelken drove in a run on a grounder, Rudolph hit a RBI single to right, and Cameron Heggie tied it up with a sac fly to center. The Soaring Eagles stranded the bases loaded. In the bottom of the 9th, Zuber drew a leadoff walk but was stranded on second after a sac bunt.
 
In the 10th, Elmira loaded the bases after two walks and a hit batsmen with no outs. van Muelken hit a liner just out of the reach of the left fielder that scored all three base runners. After a pop out, Heggie added an insurance run with a RBI single.
 
Joe Kidd came out of the pen and surrenderred a pair of two out singles but the Pioneers could not plate a run.
 
Henby led the Pioneers 11-hit attack with a 3 for 6, 1 RBI day while Zuber was 2 for 4 with 3 RBI. Burdett was 2 for 5 with a RBI and Josh Laurie (LeRoy) was 2 for 5.
 
Bawiec was 3 for 3 with four runs scored for Elmira while Fogarty was 3 for 5. van Muelken drove home four runs in two at bats while Rudolph and Plante both collected two hits.
 
Alex Crysler earned the win with two innings of relief. Kidd got the final three outs to seal the victory.
 
Jarrod Deaton (Newburgh Free Academy) was tough out of the pen for the Pioneers. He tossed 3.1 innings allowing just one earned run.
 
The contest was the first of the season played on campus for Alfred State. Prior to the game the coaching staff honored seven players (Jake Miller, Mark Bendert, Santos, Reno Cheshire, Lucas Cornell, Rafael Perozo, and Zuber) that were playing in their final home game of their Alfred State careers. 
 
The blue & gold wrap up the 2018 season on Wednesday when they travel to Falcon Park in Auburn, NY to battle Ithaca at 6:30 p.m.
