Pioneers Complete Sweep of Lakeland

The Alfred State baseball team completed a two game sweep of Lakeland (WI) University with a convincing 18-0 victory. The Pioneers scored early and often as they improved to 2-0 on the Florida portion of their spring trip.

Tim Holler (Brewster) drew a walk to lead off the game. He stole 2nd advanced to 3rd on a ground out and scored when Connor Pingitore (Amsterdam/Broadalbin Perth) lifted a sac fly to center. The Pioneers kept the pressure on in the 2nd with five more runs. Dan Woodward (Honeoye) collected a RBI single, Nick Geyer (Newburgh Free) scored on a throwing error, Mike Gibson (Schenectady) picked up a two-RBI single past a drawn in infield, and Gibson capped the scoring when he stole home while Pingitore stole second.

Gibson continued to put the pressure on the Muskies with his second RBI single of the game in the 3rd. In the 4th, the blue & gold took advantage of five walks and scored seven more times. Holler had a bases clearing triple and Danny Doran (Irondequoit) had a RBI single. Woodward drove in a run in the 7th with a double to center. A pair of runs scored on a fielding error in the 8th and Brody Burdett (Scottsdale, AZ) followed with a RBI single.

Woodward finished 3 for 5 with 3 RBI, Gibson was 2 for 3 with 4 RBI, and Holler was 2 for 6 with 3 RBI. The Pioneers drew eight walks and were hit by three pitches.

Garrett Mack (Avon) was tough on the mound. He didn't allow a hit over the first three innings and finished the day with six scoreless innings. He allowed three hits and one walk while striking out a pair. Adam Wray (Portville) threw a perfect 7th inning, Ryan Demitrovic (Churchville) tossed a scoreless 8th, and James Bilcik (Nanuet) struck out a pair in the 9th.

The 18 runs was the most scored by Alfred State since they scored 16 vs. D'Youville late in the 2017 season. The shutout was the second of the season for the blue & gold.

The Pioneers play a pair of games on Wednesday as they continue play at the Gene Cusic Classic. They take on Plymouth at 9 a.m. and Lasell at Noon.
