Pioneers Continue Roll - Sweep a Pair from the Spartans

The Alfred State baseball team ran their winning streak to four games with a doubleheader sweep at D'Youville on Wednesday. The Pioneers won 4-1 and 10-0 over the Spartans as they improve to 14-11 overall and 6-4 in AMCC play.

In the opener, the Pioneers manufactured runs and got a solid effort on the mound from Andrew Santobuono (Franklin/Unatego).

In the 1st and 2nd innings Alfred State manufactured runs. Andy Pichardo (Queens/Academy of American Studies) led off the game with a single. He stole second and went to third on a ground out. After Colin Johnson (Alfred Almond) was hit by a pitch he was able to execute a stop and steal that allowed Pichardo to score. In the 2nd, Connor Pingitore (Amsterdam/Broadalbin Perth) led off with a single. He stole second and went to third on a groundout. With one out, Pingitore and Dan Woodward (Honeoye) executed a double steal to make it 2-0.

Josh Laurie (LeRoy) lifted a sac fly in the 4th to score Johnson to make it 3-0 but the Spartans scored their lone run of the day in the bottom of the inning when they took advantage of a Pioneer error. In the 7th, Danny Doran (Irondequoit) added an insurance run when he hit a two out double to center.

Santobuono allowed six hits and no earned runs in a complete game effort to improve to 4-3 on the year. He walked two and struck out nine. Pingitore was 2 for 3 while Doran was 2 for 4 with a RBI.

Garrett Mack (Avon) continued his dominance on the mound with another complete game gem in the nightcap. He allowed just five singles and one walk while striking out 10. He is now 4-1 on the year and has lowered his ERA to 0.65 on the season. He has not allowed an earned run in 37.2 innings of work.

Mack got the offense he needed in the 3rd inning. Pichardo scored on a throwing error and Johnson drove in Doran with a triple to center. Woodward made it 3-0 in the 4th with a sac fly to score Laurie.

In the 6th, the Pioneers put the game out reach with five runs. Laurie had a RBI single, Mike Gibson (Schenectady) followed with a two-run single to right, and Pichardo capped the inning with a 2-RBI triple to right center. In the 7th, Gibson and Jack Henby (Hornell) executed a double steal to add an insurance run and Woodward capped the scoring with a RBI double down the left field line in the 9th.

Laurie was the lone Pioneer with multiple hits finishing 3 for 5 with a RBI. Pichardo, Woodward, and Gibson all drove in two each. All nine Alfred State starters recorded a hit in the contest.

The Pioneers begin a big AMCC weekend with a home doubleheader vs. Penn State Behrend. First pitch is at 1 p.m. The team hosts Pitt-Greensburg in another doubleheader on Sunday.
