Pioneers Record Nine RBIs, Rally Falls Just Short to Ferrum

The Alfred State baseball team scored seven runs in the top of the fifth to rally and tie the game but fell to the Ferrum College Panthers 13-12 on Sunday.

The Pioneers had 12 hits, 12 runs, nine RBIs and one error while the Panthers logged 12 hits, 13 runs, 12 RBIs and three errors.

Pioneer Leaders:

Devin Mersmann (Arcade/Pioneer) went 3-for-5 with three RBIs and one run.

Nick Serce (Irondequoit) went 2-for-4 with three RBIs and one run.

Matteo Avallone (Mahopac/Bridgton Academy) went 2-for-4 with two runs and two RBIs.

Owen Lansing (Lyncourt/Solvay) went 2-for-4 with three runs.

What Happened:

The Pioneers took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first after Lansing scored off a single from Bobby Sellers (Henrietta) who scored off a single from Mersmann.

The Panthers scored six in the bottom of the first off two doubles and three singles.

Alfred State responded with three runs in the top of the second. Gavin Moore (Hilton) scored off an error, Lansing scored off a sacrifice fly and Avallone scored off another single from Mersmann.

Ferrum scored six more in the bottom of the fourth off two sacrifice flies, an error, a double and a single.

The Pioneers rallied in the top of the fifth and scored seven runs to tie the game.

Lansing scored off an error, Avallone and Sellers scored off a double from Serce who scored off a double from Mersmann who scored off an error. Mason Gonzalez and Moore scored off a single from Avallone.

The Panthers winning run came in the bottom of the ninth off a double.

Pioneer Pitching:

Serce pitched 2.2 innings and allowed 6 hits, 6 runs, walked 3 and struck out 3.

James Bilcik (Nanuet) walked one in 0.1 innings.

Lewis Pettit (Bolivar) pitched 1.0 inning and allowed 3 hits, 1 run, walked 1 and struck out 3.

Jon White (Clarence) (L, 0-1) pitched 4.2 innings and allowed 3 hits, 1 run, walked 1 and struck out 3.

The Pioneers are on the road Saturday Feb. 26 to start their three-game series against Allegheny with a doubleheader starting at noon.
