The Alfred State baseball team (16-19, 10-4) battled against the Penn State-Behrend Lions (21-10, 12-2) at Behrend stadium in Erie, Pa. on Tuesday afternoon.
Game one: ASC 3, PSB 13
The Pioneers recorded 3 hits, 7 runs, 2 RBIs and 3 errors.
The Lions recorded 13 hits, 13 runs, 12 RBIs and 2 errors.
Pioneer Leaders:
Nick Serce (Irondequoit) and Devin Mersmann (Arcade/Pioneer) both went 1-for-3 with 1 RBI.
What Happened:
The Lions scored three runs during the bottom of the second inning.
During the top of the third inning Elijah Barinas (Bronx, NY/St. Raymond) scored off an error by the third baseman.
The Lions scored 9 unanswered runs between the third and fourth inning.
During the top of the fifth inning Owen Lansing (Lyncourt/Solvay) scored off a walk.
During the sixth inning Mersmann hit a sacrifice fly to plate Sam Dickerson (Cutchogue/Mattituck).
Pioneer Pitching:
Nick Serce (Irondequoit) pitched 2 innings and allowed 6 hits, 7 runs, walked 1 and struck out 2.
Tyler Staffieri (Fairport) pitched 2 innings and allowed 3 hits, 1 run, walked 1 and struck out 2.
Game two: ASC 3, PSB 9
The Pioneers recorded 8 hits, 3 runs, 3 RBIs and 2 errors.
The Lions recorded 12 hits, 9 runs, 9 RBIs and 1 error.
Pioneer Leaders:
Matteo Avallone (Mahopac/Bridgton Academy) recorded 1 RBI.
Owen Lansing (Lyncourt/Solvay) recorded 2 RBIs.
What happened:
Behrend scored eight straight runs between the first and third inning.
Avallone singled through the left side plating Gavin Moore (Hilton) during the top of the fifth inning.
The Lions scored once during the bottom of the sixth inning.
In the top of the seventh inning Lansing singled to left field bringing home Tyler Petery (Schwenksville,PA / Pope John Paul II) and Sam Dickerson (Cutchogue/Mattituck).
Pioneer Pitching:
Chris Catoire (L, 4-1) (Brooklyn/Fort Hamilton) pitched 2 innings and allowed 7 hits, 7 runs, walked 3 and struck out 2.
Spencer Riehler (Lewiston, NY / Lewiston-Porter) pitched 2 innings and allowed 2 hits, 1 run, walked 1 and struck out 0.
Connor Hong (Rochester/Gates Chili) pitched 3 innings and allowed 3 hits, 1 run, walked 0 and struck out 5.
The Pioneers will face off against Mt. Aloysius in a doubleheader on Saturday, April 30th starting at 1:00 PM.
