Pioneers Stay Alive in AMCC Tournament

The No. 3 seed Alfred State baseball team lost to the No. 2 seed Mount Aloysius in the first game of the AMCC championship tournament but came back in the second game against the No. 4 seed La Roche to stay alive.

Game one: ASC 4, MAC 9

The Pioneers (20-21) recorded 12 hits, 4 runs, 4 RBIs and 3 errors.

The Mounties (24-12) had 13 hits, 9 runs, 5 RBIs and 1 error.

Pioneer Leaders:

Sam Dickerson (Cutchogue/Mattituck) went 3-for-4 with 1 RBI.

Matteo Avallone (Mahopac/Bridgton Academy) went 2-for-4 with 2 RBIs and 1 run.

Nick Serce (Irondequoit) went 2-for-4.

Brody Burdett (Scottsdale, AZ/Horizon) had 1 RBI.

What Happened:

Jack Curabba (Shohola, Pa/Delaware Valley) scored in the top of the first inning to put the Pioneers on the board.

The Mounties scored two runs in the first and one in the second.

Dickerson singled through the left side to plate Avallone in the third.

Mount Aloysius scored two in the third and one in the fifth for a four-run lead.

In the top of the sixth, Avallone singled through the left side to bring home Curabba and Elijah Barinas (Bronx, NY/St. Raymond).

The Mounties scored one in the seventh and two in the eighth for the five-run win.

Pioneer Pitching:

Chris Catoire (Brooklyn/Fort Hamilton) (L, 5-2) pitched 7.2 innings and allowed 12 hits, 9 runs, walked 4 and struck out 3.

Game two: ASC 6, LR 5

The Pioneers (21-21) recorded 11 hits, 6 runs, 6 RBIs and 0 errors.

The RedHawks (15-20) had 8 hits, 5 runs, 4 RBIs and 1 error.

Pioneer Leaders:

Nick Serce went 3-for-4 with 1 run.

Brody Burdett (Scottsdale, AZ/Horizon) went 2-for-3 with 2 RBIs and 3 runs including a double and a home run.

Curabba went 2-for-4 with 1 run.

Sam Dickerson went 2-for-4 with 1 RBI.

Devin Mersmann (Arcade/Pioneer) had 2 RBIs and Owen Lansing (Lyncourt/Solvay) had 1.

What Happened:

La Roche took a 4-0 lead after the top of the first, but the Pioneers answered with 4 runs in the bottom to tie the game.

Burdett doubled down the left field line to plate Curabba, Mersmann singled up the middle to bring in Burdett and Serce scored, and Dickerson singled through the left side to bring home Mersmann.

In the bottom of the third Burdett homered to left field to take a 5-4 lead.

La Roche tied the game in the top of the sixth.

With two outs and one on base Lansing singled up the middle to plate Burdett for the one-run lead and ultimate game winning run.

The Pioneer defense held off the RedHawks and eliminated them from the AMCC Championship Tournament.

Pioneer Pitching:

AJ Gartland (Irondequoit) pitched .1 inning and allowed 3 hits, 4 runs and walked 1.

Christopher Mattoon (Elmira) pitched 5.1 innings and allowed 5 hits, 1 run, walked 2 and struck out 1.

Spencer Riehler (Lewiston) (W, 2-1) pitched 0.2 innings and Ryan Bailey (Union Springs) (Sv, 1) pitched 3.0 innings and struck out 3. 

The Pioneers will play the loser of Penn State-Behrend vs. Mount Aloysius on Saturday at 1 p.m.
