Pioneers Drop Two on Final Day of Spring Break

The Alfred State Baseball team dropped two games today to Rhodes and Merchant Marine. They lost to Rhodes 14-4 and Merchant Marine 3-2. 

In Game 1:

The Pioneers fell behind early after a 6-run 2nd inning gave Rhodes the lead. Alfred State answered with a run in the top of the 3rd inning on a Sam Dickerson RBI single. The Blue and Gold added more runs on 3 singles by Elijah Barinas, Devin Mersmann and Tim Holler in the 4th inning. 

Rhodes added more runs in the next four innings, pulling away from the Pioneers. 

Some standouts for Alfred State include:

Tim Holler: Holler went 2-4 with an RBI.

Elijah Barinas: Barinas went 2-3 with 2 runs scored and an RBI.

 

In Game 2:

The Pioneers lost a close game in their spring break finale. Alfred State gave up 3 runs in the first 3 innings of the game, before throwing 5 shutout innings to end the game.

A 2-run 7th inning for Alfred State came by way of Devin Mersmann and Tim Holler. Mersmann hit a sac fly that scored Joseph Schatz from third. Tim Holler hit a single that scored Owen Lansing.

The Pioneers scattered around 11 hits, but couldn't string enough together to mount a comeback. 

Some other standouts for the Pioneers include:

Christopher Mattoon: Mattoon threw six innings and gave up three runs on his day. Mattoon also struck out three.

Josh Van Bramer: Van Bramer threw 2 innings of relief and struck out two in his shutout appearance.

Tim Holler: Holler went 3-5 on his day. 

Owen Lansing: Lanswing went 3-4 and scored a run. 

The Pioneers travel back to campus tomorrow and play again next weekend at Mary Washington.
