Be the Match Bone Marrow Registry Drive

Football Team to Host Bone Marrow Registry Drive

The Alfred State football team will be hosting a Be the Match Bone Marrow Registry Drive on Wednesday, April 25th on the main floor of the Central Dining Hall. The drive will take place from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m.

Every three minutes someone is diagnosed with a blood cancer and at a Bone Marrow Registry Drive the focus is on recruiting new registry members ages 18 to 44. This is based on medical research that shows younger donors are best for patients and provide the greatest chance for transplant success. Because of this, doctors request donors in the 18 to 44 age group more than 95% of the time.

Joining the registry requires a sample of cells, usually collected by swabbing the inside of your cheek. This sample is used to compare specific protein markers, known as human leukocyte antigens (HLA) with HLA markers of patients who need a bone marrow transplant.
