Huge Offensive Day Not Enough

The Alfred State offense accumulated 533 yards of total offense but a last minute rally fell short as the Pioneers fell 50-46 on the road at Dean. The two teams combined for 96 points and 1,068 yards of offense.

Alfred State and Dean traded touchdown drives throughout the 1st half. In the 1st quarter, Dashown Wilson (Bronx/DeWitt Clinton) rushed in from six yards out (13:24) and 46 yards out (6:52) while Terrell Watts and Errol Breaux connected on four (10:27) and five yard (2:50) touchdown passes. The Pioneers led 14-12 after both two-point conversion by Dean failed.

Wilson connected with David Carroll (Mastic/Center Moriches) twice for scores in the 2nd quarter. He caught a 25-yard pass with 12:57 left  but Watts and Breaux connected on a 59-yard pass play just over five mintues later to cut the lead back to two. Carroll caught a 64-yard touchdown pass from Wilson four plays later to make it 27-19. Watts threw his 4th touchdown pass of the game with 3:05 left in the half when he connected with Quintus Reid on a 23-yard strike. The Pioneers went into half with a 27-25 lead.

Watts and Breaux connected on a 20-yard scoring play on the Bulldogs first possession of the 2nd half to give Dean their first lead (31-27). Just over three minutes later the Bulldogs pulled off a successful fake punt as Reid connected with Shannon Moxey on a 47-yard scoring play to give Dean a two-possession lead. 

Wilson dove in from one-yard out with 5:50 left in the 3rd to answer right back but Watts and Breaux connected again on a 11-yard score to make it 44-33 heading into the final 15 minutes.

2:10 into the 4th, Wilson connected with Shy'rel Broadwater (Cicero North Syracuse) on a 10-yard score but Watts found Reid for a 33-yard scoring strike five plays later. On the 4th down play with under seven minutes left, Wilson connected with Broadwater for a 64-yard scoring play to cut the lead down to 50-46.

The Pioneer defense was able to make two consecutive stops to give the offense a pair of chances to win the game. The Dean defense was able to step up and ended both drives with interceptions to seal the victory.

Wilson finished the day 14 for 28 for 279 yards and four touchdowns to go along with 217 yards rushing and three touchdowns (34 carries). Carroll finished with five catches for 107 yards and two scores while Broadwater had three catches for 89 yards and two scores.

Watts finished 18 for 28 for 260 yards and seven touchdowns. Breaux caught eight of those passes for 125 yards and five scores. Michael Bethune led the rushing attack with 213 yards on 21 carries.

Jeremiah Nixon (Staten Island/Curtis) led the Pioneer defense with nine total tackles (six solo) and 1.5 tackles for a loss. Hunter Kruger (Panama City, FL/Deane Bozeman) added five solo tackles (six total).

Gene Baisden Jr. led Dean (4-4, 4-0 ECFC) with nine tackles and the game clinching interception. Shannon Moxey added seven tackles, an interception, and a touchdown catch on the fake punt.

The Pioneers wrap up the 2019 season next Saturday when they host Maritime. Opening kickoff is slated for Noon at Pioneer Stadium.
