24 Pioneers Honored for Academic Excellence by ECFC

24 members of the Alfred State football team were honored recently as the Eastern Collegiate Football Conference (ECFC) announced the 2019 academic awards.

For the first time in conference history, the ECFC bestowed two different academic honors for achieving student-athletes. New for this season, the conference is naming an Academic Honor Roll. The Honor Roll recognizes student-athletes that achieved a 3.0 cumulative or fall semester-based G.P.A. or higher. Further, freshman and first-year transfer student-athletes are eligible for the recognition.

"I am happy that our ECFC Athletic Directors took an interest in honoring more of our student-athletes for their academic achievements," stated ECFC Commissioner Katie Boldvich. "Students that are able to balance both academics in the classroom while also contributing on the field deserve recognition not only from their institutions, but from the conference office as well. The addition of the ECFC Academic Honor Roll will certainly accomplish that and helps us to recognize more deserving student-athletes."

Seven Pioneers were named to the All-Academic team. To be eligible for the ECFC All-Academic team, a student-athlete must have earned a cumulative G.P.A. of 3.3 or higher following the 2019 fall semester. Additionally, all honorees must be at least a sophomore in standing with a minimum two years of participation on the football team.

Devon Clark (Perrysburg) earned All-Academic team honors for the 3rd time with a 3.45 GPA in Construction Management while Garvin Nixon (Brooklyn) earned it for the 2nd time with a 3.57 GPA in Business Administration. Cade Marks (Wellsburg) has a 3.78 in Construction Management, Gordon Fisher (Brockport) has a 3.68 in Electrical Construction and Maintenance, Sam Van Valkenburg (Sherman) has a 3.3 GPA in Construction Management, Trevor Carson (Bronx) has a 3.51 GPA in Criminal Justice, and Trevor Gydesen (Evan Mills) has a 3.65 GPA in Mechanical Engineering.

In total, 152 student-athletes from all six member institutions earned Academic Honor Roll recognition. 17 of those honored were Pioneers.
