Hot Shooting Lift Pioneers Past Spartans

The Alfred State men's basketball team completed the season sweep of D'Youville with a 74-67 victory on Wednesday evening. The Pioneers shot 49.1% from the field for the game.

The blue & gold fell behind 6-0 early and was able to battle back and the Pioneers led 15-14 with just under nine minutes left. They didn't let let up the lead the rest of the way and went into half with a 27-25 lead. Alfred State added to their lead in the 2nd half and led by as many as 15, 63-48, with 5:58 left. The Spartans didn't go away and cut the lead four in the final minute, 69-65, but the Pioneers scored the next five points to put the game out of reach.

Ryan Gentile (Spencerport) led the way for the blue & gold with 22 points, eight rebounds, and six assists. Jahmel Demery (Rochester/Eastridge) had a double-double with 13 points and a team high 10 boards while Josh Reding (Spencerport) finished in double figures with 11. Paris Jamison (Brooklyn/East Side Community) came off the bench and chipped in seven.

The Pioneers shot 49.1% from the field (26 for 53) and hit 75% of their shots from the foul line (18 for 24).

The Spartans were led by Simeon Heard who was 7 for 11 and had 18 points. Darrius Hartzog connected on four 3-pointers and finsihed with 16. D'Youville shot 37.7% from the field (7 for 33 from three) and 66.7% from the line.

The Pioneers head to Pitt Greensburg for a 1 p.m. contest on Saturday.
