Saints Down Pioneers in Day One of Alfred Classic

Will Engelhardt scored 24 points as St. Lawrence defeated Alfred State 77-67 on day one of the Special Tees Alfred Classic. The Pioneers are now 1-1 on the year.

Alfred State led 18-17 with just under ten minutes remaining in the 1st half. The Saints finished the half on a 23 to 13 run and led 40-31 at the break. St. Lawrence pushed the lead to over 20 early in the 2nd half. The Pioneers cut the lead to ten, 72-62 with 2:50 left but couldn't get any closer.

Josh Reding (Spencerport) led the Pioneers with 11 points, six rebounds, and four assists. Basheem Wilkerson (Brooklyn/John Jay) and Mekhi Belcher (Syracuse/Union Endicott) both came off the bench and scored ten. Tavion Williams (Bronx/FDA) finished with eight points and eight boards.

Engelhardt was 10 for 17 from the field and 4 for 9 from three to net his 24 points. Trent Adamson had a double-double with 19 points and 12 boards while Trey Syroka chipped in 17.

The Saints shot 50% for the game including 54.8% in the 1st half. The Pioneers shot just 33.3% for the game.

The Pioneers host day two of the Alfred Classic. Alfred University takes on St. Lawrence at 2 p.m. followed by Alfred State taking on Ithaca. In the other match-up on Friday night, the Saxons downed the Bombers 75-72.
