Pioneers Win in Final Seconds Against Mount Aloysius

Basheem Wilkerson (Brooklyn/John Jay) recorded the game winning basket with less than one second remaining in the game to assist the Alfred State men's basketball team in a 72-70 win over the Mount Aloysius Mounties Saturday evening inside Orvis Gymnasium.

The Pioneers improve to 8-10 overall and 4-6 in the AMCC while the Mounties move to 3-16 overall and 1-9 in the conference.

Alfred State shot 34.3% in field goals and 89.5% in free throws while Mount Aloysius shot 49.1% in field goals and 64.7% in free throws. The Mounties out-rebounded the Pioneers 39-36 but recorded 31 turnovers that Alfred State was able to capitalize on and score 31 points off of.

Wilkerson and Ryan Rosa (Middletown) both led the team 12 points. Rosa went four-for-four in three-pointers and had four rebounds.

Paris Jamison (Brooklyn/East Side Community) put up 10 points, Mekhi Belcher (Syracuse/Union Endicott) chipped in nine points and Tavion Williams (Bronx/FDA) added eight points and a team-high of seven rebounds. Josh Romero (Bronx/Theodore Roosevelt) picked up five rebounds and Isaiah Kostyal (Poughkeepsie/Arlington) had four assists.

The game was tied 18 times and the lead changes 24 times. The Mounties took a nine-point edge in the first half, but the Pioneers went on a 14-point run for a 23-18 lead with 6:55 left.

The rest of the half was a back-and-forth affair and the teams headed into halftime tied 34-34.

Mount Aloysius had an eight-point advantage with 4:29 remaining in the game and Alfred State went on a ten-point run for a two-point edge with 37 seconds left. The Mounties tied it up with 25 seconds on the clock, but Pioneers prevailed and took the two-point win.

The men are away on Wednesday, Feb. 2 to play Hilbert at 7:30 p.m.
