Pioneers Win Finale

The Alfred State lacrosse team closed out the 2016 season with a decisive 18-10 victory over Medaille. The Pioneers outscored the Mavericks 10-3 in the 2nd and 3rd quarters.

The blue & gold held a 4-3 lead after the 1st quarter after Aaron Buck (Churchville) scored the quarters final two goals. Joshua Aviles (Middletown) and Joe Johnson (Chuchville) also scored in the quarter.

Medaille tied it up in the 2nd before the Pioneers scored the games next five goals. Buck and Johnson both scored twice and Ryan Colgan (Warwick Valley) to take the lead for good. Medaille scored the final goal of the half to make it 9-5 at the break.

Buck scored three times in the 3rd while Nathan Serio (Silver Creek) and Nicolas Covelli (Carmel) scored once as the Pioneers outscored the Mavericks 5-1.

Both Alfred State and Medaille netted four goals in the 4th quarter. Buck scored twice while Aviles and Patrick Matkoski (West Genesee) scored once.

Buck finished the day with nine goals and three assists. In the last three games of the season, Buck has recorded 34 points.

Johnson finished with three goals and three assists, Aviles netted two goals, and Kyle Hoke (Tully) passed out three assists. Matkoski and Serio both had one goal and an assist, Covelli and Colgan scored once, and Brian Mitchell (Lake Shore) passed out an assist.

Ryan Amidon (Fayetteville Manlius) made 10 saves in net for the Pioneers in the first 45 minutes to earn the victory.

Brian Kelly led the Medaille with two goals and an assist while Jake Rush and Adam Brennan scored twice.

The Pioneers finish the season with a 5-11 mark. The five victories is the most for Alfred State in the NCAA DIII era.The blue & gold held a 47-40 shot advantage in the game and converted on three of their eight extra man opportunities.
