Lacrosse Team Ready to Start 2019 Season

The Alfred State lacrosse team opens up the 2019 season this weekend with a road contest at Keuka. The team will rely on a strong nucleus of returners to guide the team to success in 2019.

16 players on the team have experience wearing the blue & gold. Senior Joe Johnson (Churchville Chili) and goalie Matt Cobb (Churchville) highlight the returners.

  • Johnson has played in 49 games in his career and has netted 126 goals and passed out 35 assists. He is coming off a 2018 season in which he scored a 37 times and passed out eight assists.
  • Cobb returns for his second year in net for the Pioneers. He made 204 saves last year (55.4% save percentage) in 16 games.

Other key offensive contributors include AJ Soto (Churchville), Eric Passeck (Thomaston, CT), and Nic Covelli (Wappingers Falls). Soto has 33 career goals and 28 assists in two years, Passeck scored 11 goals and had seven assists last year, and Covelli 18 goals and six assists in his three seasons. Nathan Crowley (West Irondequoit) returns for  his sophomore season after winning 198 faceoffs last year along with picking up 135 ground balls and scoring seven goals.

In front of Cobb, returners Jared Tegler (Churchville),Scott Fingar (Penn Yan), and Dave Privatera (LeRoy) will key to slow down opponents offensive attacks.

Coach Jonathan Hoover (4th season) will also look for contributions from newcomers Tyler Baker (Lee Center/Rome Free), Tucker Sutphen (Spencerport/Brockport), and Derrick Magsamen (Pine Bush). All three will be asked to be contributors in the midfield.

The 2019 schedule features match-ups with opponents from the NEAC, the AMCC, and the Empire 8. The team will also play out of the region versus Hiram (OH) and Farmingdale.
