Canton's Big 2nd Half Lifts Roos to Victory

SUNY Canton outscored Alfred State 10-1 in the 2nd half as they earned the 16-6 victory on Wednesday afternoon. The game was tied at 5-5 late in the 2nd quarter before the Roos started their big run to take control of the game.

Nic Covelli (Carmel) got the Pioneers on the board 1:19 into the game after getting a pass from Joe Johnson (Churchville). At the 10:00 mark, SUNY Canton tied it up before Johnson answered with his first of three goals 43 seconds later. The Roos scored the next three goals before Johnson closed the 1st quarter scoring with 2:29 left after getting a pass from Tyler Baker (Rome Free). 

In the opening minutes of the 2nd quarter, Johnson finished the hat trick for the Pioneers to tie the game at 4-4. Covelli was credited with the assist. Canton and Alfred State traded goals to make the game 5-5 with 10 minutes left in the half. AJ Soto (Churchville) scored unassisted for the blue & gold. With 1:23 left Canton grabbed the lead for good on a Jacob Facey goal.

The Roos dominated the 3rd quarter scoring six unanswered goals and held a 15 to 6 shot advantage. They kept the pressure on the in the 4th outscoring the Pioneers 4-1. Covelli scored the lone goal for Alfred State after getting a fast break pass from Soto. 

Johnson led the way for the Pioneers (5-7) with three goals and an assist while Covelli finished with two goals and an assist. Matt Cobb (Churchville) made 18 saves in net.

Josh Yelvington led the Roos (7-5) with four goals and an assist while Hunter Olsen finished with three goals and an assist. Kody Kocsis made 15 saves in net to earn the victory. Canton held a 45-40 shot advantage in the game.

Alfred State looks to bounce back at home on Friday when they take on Hilbert at 4 p.m. in their season finale.
