Late Goals Lift Pioneers in Regular Season Finale

The Alfred State men's soccer team scored twice in the final 1:47 of the contest to earn a 3-1 victory over Hilbert in the regular season finale for both teams. The Pioneers are now 5-11 on the year.

With the game tied at 1-1 with just under two minutes remaining, John Mormino (Alfred Almond) made a tough play to advance the ball and then found Tyler Landries (Genesee Valley). Landries was able to take the crossing pass and fired a shot to the far corner to give the Pioneers the lead.

1:12 later another nice pass, this time a long cross by Brian Markel (Arkport), led to a goal by Markus Ernest (Alfred Almond). Ernest was able to take the pass by the goalie and fired it into the empty net.

Justus Hoffmann (Hamburg) started the scoring 17:02 into the game when he scored his first of the season after getting a pass from Ernest. Hilbert tied it up in the 37th minute on a goal by Garrett Rehner.

The Pioneers held a 20 to 6 shot advantage in the game. Jacob Bartz (West Seneca) made four saves to earn the victory.

The Pioneers will travel to Portland, ME next weekend to compete in the ACAA Championships. Seeding a 1st round pairing of the two-day tournament will be announced early next week.
