Late Goal Lifts Spartans

Josh Hammer connected on a header off a corner kick from Alf Egge with 2:49 remaining to lift D'Youville to a 2-1 victory over Alfred State on Friday evening.

Hunter Sherman gave the Spartans an early lead in the 6th minute when drove down the middle of the box and slipped a shot into the left side of the net after getting a pass from Khaled Numan-Ali. The Pioneers could not get anything past the D'Youville keeper despite holding a 5 to 4 shot advantage.

The game remained 1-0 until the 80th minute when Abdou Mbaye (Bronx/Bayard Rustin) danced around the keeper and snuck a shot into the corner of the net after getting a pass from Brandon Holley (Livonia).

With just under three minutes left, the Spartans got their fifth corner kick opportunity of the 2nd half. Egge stepped up and delivered a pass to middle of the goal box that found the leaping head of Hammer.

Alfred State held a 10 to 7 shot advantage in the game. Peter Petruzzo made five saves in net for the Spartans to earn the win while Vinny Biancuzzo (Genesee Valley) made one save for the Pioneers.

The Pioneers are back in action on Tuesday when they host SUNY Poly at 6 p.m.
