Pioneers Battle Ithaca Tough

The Alfred State men's soccer team battle Ithaca tough but were tripped up 2-0 by the Bombers in the season opener for both teams.

Jon Kyriakidis got the Bombers on the board 12:50 into the game when his shot narrowly snuck into the net following a nice flick pass by Nate Schoen. Ithaca tried to add to the lead but the Pioneer defense and freshmen goalie Nico Coria (Honeoye Falls) kept the game 1-0 after the first half. The Bombers held a 14-2 shot advantage in the opening half.

The game remained 1-0 until the 63rd minute when Kyriakidis used nifty footwork and found Jack Monnes in front of the net to make it 2-0. Alfred State had a chances to cut into the lead but was unable to get one by Max Lichtenstein.

Coria finished the game with seven saves in his collegiate debut while Lichtenstein made two saves in the shutout.

Ithaca finished the game with a 27 to 4 shot advantage.

The Pioneers are back in action on Sunday when they travel to SUNY Delhi for a 1 p.m. start vs. the Broncos.
