Pioneers Extend Lead Again. Break More Records Along the Way

After day three of competition at the 2023 AMCC/ Empire 8 Swimming and Diving championships the Pioneers are in first place of both conferences. With 823 team points, the Pioneers are over 200 points ahead of second place Alfred University and third place Penn.- St. Behrend.

After a morning of prelims, the finals of the 400 IM, 100 Butterfly, 200 IM, 200 free, 100 breast, 100 back and 400 medley all took place at the Webster Aquatic Center.

Rafael Kowal (Plattsburgh, NY / Plattsburgh) started the men's finals with a second place finish in the 400 IM. His time of 4:12.34 was good enough for a new Alfred State Record.

Kellen Fletcher (Wrightstown, NJ / Northerrn Burlington) swam the 100 fly and won with a time of 49.50. Fletcher's time was a school and meet record. Luca Aldewereld (Cleveland, OH / N. Royalton) swam in the event and finished in third with a time of 50.72. 

Westin Perry (Hartsville, NY / Canisteo Greenwood) swam in the 200 free and won the event by one second. Perry's time of 1:41.22 was just better than teammate Jazz Widney (Tulsa, OK / Jenks) who finished in 1:42.75. Perry also won the 100 backstroke with a time of 49.82, almost two seconds faster than second place. Perry's time was a new school and meet record.

Stuart Yates (Naples, NY / Naples) swam in the 100 breaststroke and finished in second place. Yates' time of 57.92 was only 8 hundredths of a second behind the first-place finisher. Yates' time was good enough for a new Alfred State record. 

Perry, Widney, Yates and Fletcher competed in the 400 Medley Relay and won in dominant fashion. The Pioneers set a school and meet record with their time of 3:23.69. 

The four day meet concludes tomorrow morning with prelims and finals in the evening. The awards ceremony will immediately follow the conclusion of the meet.
